After a bit of internet searching and a few phone calls I've managed to get hold of 4 x 2m lengths of straight BR standard Z section steel to repair the extensively rusted structure of Hastings Coach (Lab 4). I delivered them aboard the coach today and also saw how the ERM team are getting on with 49006.

The entire outside of the vehicle is now pprimer painted, in a very military looking green, but then it did spend most of its life at Kineton! I'll try and post the pics in a P Train gallery here as soon as I've posted this.

We now need a two welders, one a machine and the other a human being to use it so we can start repairing Hastings. <g>

I've just uploaded a bunch of photos of 49006, the National Collection Power Car which had arrived at Shildon around the time we moved APT-E from York after it had spent about 1/4 century outside at Kineton.

I TRIED to upload them in chronological order, but the uploader carefully re-arranged them into alphabetical order. Sometimes I HATE technology!!!!

An interesting photo tilt-wise that is.

The P-Train Power Car and most of the Trailer Cars seem to be tilting correctly, almost parallel to the track which would indicate the train is moving at line speed or slower. But the leading Trailer Car is tilting OUTWARD a little! Not to the full 9 degrees admittedly, but just a bit.

I'm at a loss to work out what could have happened there, unless that Trainler Car was caught right in the middle of an outward tilt failure.

It's possible Gerry, yes. They could be running the sub-systems from the diesel APU and that counted tilt amongst its uses.

If they're running tilt passive the crew at the start point did a pretty poor job of setting it up! <g>

Sadly, he couldn't give me a date when the servers will be back up again at present.

Not quite core APT-E news, but if people haven’t heard about it, BBC4 is showing “The Intercity 125 – The Age of The Train”  tonight (Thursday) at 9pm.

I’m not sure if the APT will be mentioned as part of the surrounding story, but it should be interesting nonetheless.  As someone who still relies on these to get to work every day, they still are an impressive beast (even re-engined, and under far too many layers of paint).

It looks very much like my book, now to be entitled “British Rail: The Nation’s Railway” will be published next year.

I would very much like to include some pictures of the APT, both versions if possible; maybe some development stages including HSFV-1, if there is room. I am afraid I cannot pay very much but if anyone is willing to licence me to use their pictures I would be grateful.

Best wishes

Typically very late and incredibly well deserved!

Hi Nick,
Well spotted, you have gained some points for that one.

Actually, the postcode on it is well wrong, thats why I didnt blank it out.

I am suprised it actually made it to me at all.

But thank you for pointing it out, just in case.

Regards

Paul

If you want a laugh, watch this video of us in E train on Saturday.

No damage, it was a short on one of the feed cables, more next time.

Lets not tell the NRN about this, LOL!!!!!!!!!

I feel I should point out that Shane has been the ONLY person to work on Lab 4, almost since the day we moved her to Coventry. We owe him a big cheer for all the mind-numbing work he's done on the roof so far.

Sadly I've been laid low with pneumonia for most of the late summer and autumn and I've only just recovered enough to drive again in the last week or so. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to Coventry in the New Year.

We did find that the straight 'Z' section stringer structure under the end windows on the east side, what we call the 'Good Side', had corroded badly and it all needs to be replaced. I managed to obtain some 16 ft of the 'Z' section to do this, but we need a welder, both the machine and the person, to do the job.

As there are very few of us available to work on Lab 4, two at present, and almost zero funding, it's going to be a long time before we get her looking anywhere near like she did in 1974.

I do have a cunning plan up my sleeve to give visitors and idea of what she may look like eventually though......

Regards
Kit

Magic stuff there Paul, well spotted!

I've never seen a vid of the tilt rig actually moving before, it sure takes me back! <g>

As for those vandals stripping out the P-Trains, they should be ashamed of themselves.

I have sound on the last two clips; admittedly, it seems to be at fairly low level. (A bit sad to have it on the last one!)

Some unintentionally amusing text in the OCR'd caption information on the first clip... could we have some informed Kitteration about exactly what part of the test procedure is being undertaken, preferably with some good stories...?

Subject: Re: Digest Number 1491
Hm yes, whoever wrote that caption does not seem to have English as their primary language. I'm not even sure that there IS such a language on the planet!

As for the testing going on, the Power Car bouncing up and down is being vibrated at low frequency to determine it's natural vertical bending frequency, in the fond hope that it didn't co-incide with the secondary suspension's natural frequency and thus bounce itself off the track. It didn't, rather obviously, or I probably wouldn't have been able to write this.

Similar tests in the lateral mode showed up a troublesome frequency later on and that was one reason why the 5th turbine was mounted as a tuned mass damper during one re-build. The damper concerned is just one of the items you're likely to trip over when passing through PC1 and PC2. I don't of course because my head knows EXACTLY where they are due to some subliminal counting of strides from one end of the vehicle or the other.....

That SA bogie they show looks VERY clean and polished, it must be one of the E Train bogies as the POP Train SA bogies were never THAT clean!

As for the tilt rig swinging back and forth, we were doing pretty much the same thing as the 'Bouncing Power Car' was, ie finding out the natural frequencies of the tilt system with a suitable mass attached. The rig simulated half a power car or trailer car depending how many ballast weights we had loaded in 'The Coffin'.

That was quite an early test as there's no sign of the large coils of hydraulic pipework we installed to simulate half the length of a vehicle. Looking at the stuff in the background I think that was part od our test programme to evaluate different types of servo-valve, which were pretty comprehensive but oh so time consuming!

It was during one of those tests that the famous 'Burst Hose' incident occured, referred to by Hugh Williams in 'The Bible' when I had to whizz down the stairs and shut down the main laboratory HPS (er, sorry, Hydrualic Power Supply) to prevent it flooding out the whole lab. What Hugh didn't mention was the large pile of ballast weights that were just out of shot to the right of the rig. I had to clear those to reach the emergency stop button and apparently I made it in one bound with feet to spare! I can't remember myself but the others were asking how I did at the High Jump afterwards....

Regards
Kit

FANTASTIC photos Paul!

Talk about nostalgic, that one with Barrie, Malc and David installing the stuff looks JUST like it did when were building it in 1972! And Malc has hardly changed a jot either, superb work all of you.
