Well done David, if the P-Train site went down at least we have an archive copy of Dr. Alan's paper here.

I just LOVE this bit..... <g>

It's not at Derby any more of course, but I agree 100% with Dr. Alan's sentiments about HSFV1 being at the NRM!

My intention at the moment is to include a chapter on the technological
advances achieved during the British Rail era. This will include such
matters as integral carriages, Pandrol clips - and the APT.
My view is that BR was a success in spite of its own flaws, and that is a
primary theme of the book. The many technical advances gained by the APT
project will be laid out, but with the question mark as to whether it was
the business of the organisation charged with the day-to-day running of the
railway network to undertake such research. Who else, though? The situation
then will be contrasted with that today, where the TOCs and other companies
involved in the railway system are limited by contracts to specific
responsibilities carried out over a short term, and no one any more can
undertake such long term projects. In other words, the conclusion will be
that we have lost out.

I now have the Williams book - cost me a bomb but it seems to be rare. It
gives a good lowdown on the APT and I do feel I should do the background
reading before pestering anyone for info.
Does anyone know of any howlers I should be aware of in the book?

Hi,
Hugh was the train supervisor and not a nuts and bolts man, but the book is very accurate, due to the input from several other team members, including Kit.

As far as I am aware, having read it 100s of times, thet is nothing to watch out for. Just be aware that the book was published before the end of the APT project in 1986.

Paul

I wrote my University dissertation on the 'failure' of the APT-P. My research went slightly beyond the Williams book. I'd be very happy to send you a copy, if you'd like to read it.

Is this something that could be made available to other interested Group members. I am sure there are others that would welcome sight of this and I am sure it would be an interesting read

Hello everyone,

I've been a member of this Group for some time but I didn't appreciate at first that absolutely no one would know about it until I introduced myself. Soon after that realisation I became ill and six months were lost to the illness followed by a further six months of apathy while I came to terms with my situation.

I am happy to say that I'm now almost back to my old self and reading the various e-mails about "the Williams Book" has prompted me to raise my head above the parapet. I apologise for the fact that the majority of people in the Group are new to me but that is entirely my fault for not keeping up with events since my engineering career took a diversion into the automotive industry followed by my retirement five years ago. I guess Mr Tilt himself is the the only contact I've had since leaving the Research Department but I hope I can now put that right through contact with this Group.

Kindest regards to everyone, Hugh Williams

Dear Hugh Williams,

I would also like to read your book on APT.
Railway's technology is one of the topics I most care in my research and
you can imagine my interest on all that concerns the history of APT
technical developments and all the other issues of that most important
project carried out in the UK.

Hi Paul,

Just saw your last comment - Is there a plan for a relaunch of the APT preservation group, or is this a relaunch of the APT yahoogroup?

I there's an interest in trying to do an event, then it would be good to put out some dates in advance - there's probably others (who can claim no part of the original involvement) but who'd see if they could make it.

(this is coming from someone who wanted to come and see Kit's talk, but had to make do with watching it on video... still interesting - but the exploded diagram on the OHP was a bit fuzzy :))

Hi Gordon,
Its a re-launch of the E train support group we are planning, and have been for some time.

Myself and Kit have another meeting in September at the NRM, which this issue is being talked about. At the present time, it looks like it might take place during Locomotions cab-it weekend in November, I will have to check the dates and get back to you all.

Like Ive said to Hugh, if we can arrange to get E train staff up there at the same time, it would be brilliant.

Im gonna start firing off a few emails to the old team, to see if anyone would be able to attend. Pam up at Shildon has already offered media coverage once we have set a date.

I will keep everyone posted.

Regards

Certainly! I've been meaning to do it for sometime. I wrote it back in 2006 and many of you answered my questions regarding the APT and the situation surrounding its development. Only problem is that the file is quite big. So, once I find out how to shrink it down, I'll send it to the forum to get posted.

Cheers,

Hi Ben

if it is a MS word, works or publisher document if you send it to me on a CD I can convert it to a PDF file for you - I'll send my address in an email to you - Also I think there is a file size limit on Yahoo so the doc is best hosted on either www.apt-p.com or apt-e.org

Best wishes

One way to shrink a big file is to print it out as a PDF (using free
software such as BullzipPDF if you don't already have some). The size will
depend on the pictures you've included, but it's generally a lot smaller
than a word processing document.

Gents

You can compress the pictures in any microsoft Word documents, by opening
the picture tool bar and use the compress function.......this seriously
reduces document file sizes.

Please find example print screen below............(I wish alot more people
know how to use this function).

Hope this helps

Hehehe, I'm sure he'd be flattered!

Whenever Hugh was on board E-Train he was 'Officer in charge of the Train' as I recall. All communications to the 'Real Railway' Staff on board, the Field Trials Staff and the Inspectors, went via Hugh. Someone had to have a handle on the overall picture and the rest of us were usually deeply buried in our own particular specialisations of course, so Hugh was THE man.

Perhaps 'God' wouldn't be too far off the mark. <g>

Come on guys, you've got me blushing here and ready to duck down behind the parapet again. From my recollection we didn't use nicknames at the time and certainly nothing springs to mind in my case, certainly not what's suggested here! For your information I spent the early part of my railway career as number two to Mr Tilt so I hope that puts me more into context. As to my book being called "The Bible", that embarrasses me too.
I always thought I'd been too critical of the project and felt slightly guilty about writing it. There were many, many very clever people at the Railway at that time who had a much, much bigger part to play in the project than I did. I certainly couldn't have written the book if I still worked at the Railway. The fact that it was the only book of its type around at the time had more to do with its perceived status than the actual content. So to summarise, if you want me to play any part in this Group - and I want to after all this time in the wilderness - you will have to tone down the rhetoric, but thank you anyway.

Regards, Hugh.

Paul

Your email says 15 November for the Re-launch but the web site gives 6 November.

Can you clear the confusion?

Cheers

It looks like Paul was on such a high after the meeting he had the wrong calendar open...... <g>

The meeting was yesterday, the 15th Oct, but sadly I couldn't make it, and the re-launch is meant to coincide with the Record Breakers weekend at Shildon on November the 6th and 7th. As Tim says there's a small work day on E-Train prior to that though.

Currently I'm going to give a cut-down version of my whole APT Slide lecture at 11 am and 2 or 3 pm each day. It's going to be limited to E-Train itself, plus anything that preceded it, like HSFV1 and POP, but not Hastings, Trestrol or P-Train. This is because a) we don't want it to be too long and b) we need to grab the attention of potential local Support Group members on APT-E itself.

Paul has lots of other good audio visual ideas to run on the day too, so it should be quite a show.

Regards
Kit

Hello All,
After a very good meeting today (5th Octobe ) it has been agreed that the support group can re-launch and start work on E train.

A re-launch event has been planned for the 6th November 2010, to co-inside with a cab-it event called Record Breakers up at Locomotion, Shildon.

It is hoped that volenteers from the North East will come forward to help with the long hard work ahead to restore E train.

Please see : -

If you have some spare time, come see us.

Wish us luck and hope that this is the start of a new chapter for APT-E.

Long live the APT.

Subject: Interesting story on APT - found in Rail Enthusiast Feb1982
Hi,

While I was down in Swanage (of all places!), I sat on the platform with my son waiting for the service to Corfe Castle. There was a large pile of 'old railway magazines' which I flicked through, and I came across a wonderful article on a journey on ATP - written in December 1981 shortly after its passenger launch... with all the hope that this was to be the future.

Given the APT-E open day coming up, I thought I finally ought to do something with it, so I have scanned it in.

I'm not sure where we stand with copyright - Rail Enthusiast has (I believe) now changed to Rail, and this all pre-dates email addresses. (The authors are Peter Kelly, and Geoffrey Freeman Allen)

If people are interested, let me know - and if anyone is able to comment on whether it can be put on a website, I'll happily upload it.

I will quote Peter's last paragraph though: "The revolutionary features of the APT, the hydrokinetic brakes and the tilt mechanism, work well - and it's the niggling little things that are letting it down now. I'm sure BR will get it right, but perhaps there should be an intense period of non-passenger-carrying trials first"

That was February 1982!

Hello Gordon,
Id be very interested in seeing this. I dont think that there would a copyright issue due to the time frame. We have posted acticles before on here.

The E train open day activites are coming along nicely, just completed a video presentation with a guest presenter.

Regards

Paul

The Publisher's rights to the 'typographical layout' expired 25 years after
publication, so you are clear with them.

The Authors' Copyright will expire 70 years after the death of the final
survivor, so the permission of them or their heirs is still required.

There are a few situations where material may be copied without permission.

I thought there might be a lingering copyright issue from the authors...  If Peter Kelly or Geoffrey Allen are on this list, we might be in luck!    Otherwise I’d be happy to distribute to people who ask under “non-commercial research”  (thanks David, I was googling for copyright FAQs but the IPO website never came up)

Hopefully see some of you at Shildon next Saturday!

Gordon
