Subject: Question: how many APT-P ran as 6-car sets?
Did anyone remember which APT-P trains actually ran as full 6-car sets? Certainly 370005, 370006 and 370007 were delivered to Shields depot as full  sets.  What about the others though?

370002 was planned as a full set, but I think it emerged in 1981 as a 2-car - does anyone remember how long it was at the Crewe works open day in 1981?

370003 was initially delivered as a 5-car but finished up as a 3.

370004 seemed to be a 2-car throughout it's short career - unless you know different?

370001/2 were initially delivered as 3-car units but seem to have been shortened to 2 around 1980.

So assuming that only 3 full sets ever ran, I suspect that some vehicles never actually left Litchurch Lane and may not even have been fully fitted out. I would guess that the sheer number of modifications required meant that BR needed to focus on a smaller fleet.

Hi everyone,

All attachments are stored on site, go to the Home page of the group & click on 'Attachments' in the left-hand column.

Subject: Attachments

Hi everyone

As owner of another - admittedly much smaller - Yahoo group, I've had some pertinent experience of attachments.

Until a few months ago, all my group's attachments were delivered with the message, just like email from individual sources. Suddenly, all attachments were kept on the server and messages would have a line added at the top, thus:

and an icon for each attachment at the bottom which linked to the Yahoo website and downloaded the attachment, to be saved or opened in the appropriate program. It was a deliberate policy change on the part of Yahoo but in the options it's possible to change to having the attachments delivered with the message in the conventional way.

There were complaints from my group so I tried to find out what was going on and found, on a Yahoo forum, that I could change back to the previous situation using the options under Management -> Group Settings -> Posting and Archives -> (edit) then selecting Attachments -> Include in emails.

Hope that helps

Regards

Gerry

Gerry,

It's worth you, indeed all Moderators, joining the Moderator Central Group,
which is the way Yahoo has been keeping us up to date with these and other
changes.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/moderatorcentral/

It's an announcement-only group, but the posts have links to relevant Blogs
where we can make comments.

On the attachment front, Moderators have been badgering for the attachments
to be stored on-site for years - ever since they were taken off in fact.
The reason is that having the attachments on-site means that one can read
the Archive and still see the pictures, which makes a group like this one
hugely more useful.
At its simplest, now you've switched back, anyone who joins your group
tomorrow cannot even see today's pictures.

I too have bowed to member-pressure and switched some of my groups back to
pictures in email - it makes conversation go that little bit faster, and
helps those who cannot stay on-line all the time.
But I do hope this group, with its strong Archival element, will stick
with the new system and save future attachments on the website. Please!

Just when Yahoo thought they were about to collect lots of Brownie Points
for this major enhancement, they got massive rollocking from the user
community - what we had all anticipated was a fourth choice, namely to
store the pictures AND send them out with the emails, like they used to do.
Well, they haven't ruled out making the change in the future, but the Yahoo
Group empire is so vast that it is taking years to roll-out the present
change.

David et al,

As a user & group owner/moderator of many Yahoo! Groups (formally eGroups) for over 10 years there isn't much that I don't know about the management & features of these great 'Groups' so if anybody has any questions please don't hesitate to contact me OFF-GROUP: APT370@...

As David has already mentioned, the new system is ideal for this group & will remain in place until Yahoo! decide otherwise.

Kindest regards,
Andy

Crewe? (ducks for cover!)

Thanks David. I will work out what I need to know and write to this

Sorry, but i've only just come across this correspondence, but as the only jobsworth likley to make an issue, I thought I should put the record straight. I currently manage Railway Documentation and Drawing Services Ltd which manages, through Serco, the library in Derby of 300,000 drawings and 30,000 documents relating to ex BRB T&RS. The library does not contain any APT-E drawings but it does hold those for APT-P. So - I know a little about the subject.

1 BRB(R) still owns the copyright to any APT drawings
2 BRB(R) also owns the original drawings - anyone who has an original drawing has come by it through nefarious means and certainly has no right to "own" it and cetainly does not own the copyright. Owning a book does not mean that the owner of the book also owns the copyright to its contents.

HOWEVER, RDDS has a copy of an agreement from BRB(R) that any of its drawings in which it has copyright can be copied and used by any person SO there is no restriction on the use to which copies of APT drawings can be put.

I suggest that it would probably be quite sensible for those who have somehow obtained the microfilms of certain key APT-P drawings to return them to RDDS via me to ensure that we retain a full set of the drawings.

Evening All

Just to say hello as I've joined the group. Some of you will know me, others not. Some may abuse me for what I do, but I'm here out of genuine interest.

I - for my sins - and yes, I've read the anti NRM comments - am Senior Curator of Rail Vehicle Collections at the NRM and have before then been Curator at Shildon for 5 1/2 years.

Today, Paul, Kit, myself and Matt Hick, the NRM volunteer manager and Pam Porter from Locomotion met at York and we really really hope we have a way forward for E Train. We have made some anti tilt blocks and hope that they can be fitted before very long and the cab of Power Car 2 made accessible for a Cab It event in June.

Please bear with us from the NRM, I understand and share your frustrations, but believe me, I'm on the side of E train!

Sorry Paul if I've stolen your thunder, but thought it best if I introduced myself. Oh, yes, to give you my qualifications - I have worked in industrial and transport museums for a living since 1997, and have been a heritage railway volunteer for 22 years - and I like ALL railways, not just steam.

Cheers and I look forward to a good time on this group learning from you all and seeing maybe some of you as work on E train progresses.

Welcome to the group Anthony. I have no beefs with the NRM but would not
press the issue if I did as York is my Alma Mater! I am the carriage steward
of the HMRS, amongst other things (see below).
It's nice to hear from someone at the NRM - I will visit again at sometime,
fingers x.

Best wishes.

Hi Anthony,
Glad you have come on board at last. Im reallt pleased that you have introduced yourself, and yes, everyone, Athony is really on the side of E train, so lets give him all the support we can.

The meeting cleared the air, and both myself and Kit are now very positive about E trains future.

Best regards

How many turbines were installed in the E train? Are any or all of them still in place.

Is there any possibility that one of them could be run at some time in the future?

Here's a picture of TC2 in the NRM some years ago, with a Leyland gas-turbine engine (and several antique railway office chairs!) alongside.

There were 5 engines in each power car; four for traction and one for auxiliary power, I believe.

No doubt Kit or Paul will be able to respond on whether one will ever run.

    Hi Stephen,
When first built 4 turbines where used for motive power and 1 for aux, but after rebuild 1. that turine was moved forward to added to the motive power horse power, and a APU generator was fitted in the bay left from from the moved turbine. So it ended up with 10 x 350 hp engines, and 2 x APU generators.

As for the will ojne ever run again, we have 2 zero hour turbines, and yes, we would love to run one up. Mark Barnard who is one of the engineers from Leyland who worked on the turbines, is only too willing to give us a hand on this front.

It last around 2 hours and is 722mb in size.

Well worth a download and watch, very funny in many places.

I will post again when the upload, and I have created a link for you all to gain access.

      Hi Paul,

      Unzipped and enjoyed :-)

But (and there always seems to be a "but".....)

with a file size of 722Mb I had many many dropped connections and it was a struggle to download, and took many attempts - some of which were very frustrating when I got to 97% after many hours... and the connection dropped :-(

I suspect others may be having the same problems, and so I wonder if it might be beneficial to either make the file into a Torrent, so that it can be downloaded "quietly" without having to download all of it in one go... or perhaps you could split the file up into smaller chunks using something like GSplit3
      http://www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit/index.aspx
which is free - and splits large files into many, much smaller (and more manageable) chunks.
An advantage of GSplit3 is also that the 1st file is an executable, so the downloader doesn't need to install software - and the many chunks just magically re-form themselves into the single original file, when the 1st file is run.

      Thanks

      Peter D.

I downloaded it with Orbit Downloader, it's free and lets you pause,
resume etc downloads. It recovers from failed downloads, and it can
download multiple streams at once so that you download at the full speed
      of your internet connection.

Very interesting video! I thought I'd take up the challenge and try to
upload it into a bittorrent client.

It's now sitting (as a raw wmv file) on my pc, torrent hash is:

      magnet:?xt=urn:btih:5TJTZJAABZX7VNZLJGTY6LKATK3SYTK4

I guess the more people who download & seed it, the faster future downloads
will be. I've no idea how to get it on a search engine, but that link
      above should be good enough!

      Hi Gordon,

Magnet Links are a bit specialist - so I've created a "standard" Torrent file.

I've offered the Torrent file to the Group Admin with a view to it going in the files section, but it hasn't been approved yet.

If anybody wants to try a Torrent download, drop me an email, and I'll send it to you "off list"

.... and hopefully now, anybody who hasn't already got the lecture, and would like to see it, has a choice of a reduced size .mpg, a Magnet Link, a Torrent, and downloading via "Orbit" :-)

      Cheers

      Peter D.

We now have a possible home for HSFV1 thanks to Nick Evans of the Electric Railway Museum in Coventry.

Currently, Kit is firing off a letter to Serco so that plans can be drawn up to remove HSFV1 from the RTC yard, hoping that they already havent done so to mr scrap man.

The only item required for us now, is to supply some sleepers with chairs so that a plinth can be made to stand HSFV1 on, we are looking into this as we speak. However if any one can help in this matter, please contact me ASAP.

Things at present are looking a lot better for HSFV1, and lets hope things dont take a backward step.

      We will keep you posted.

        Hi All,
Some good news at last, the APT-E group are now in formal talks with Serco about the tranfer of ownership of HSV1. We are also in the process of arranging its move from Derby RTC to Coventry (The Electric Railway Museum), thanks to Andrew Goodman (Moveright International).

As with most cases that involve APT-E/HSFV1 Kit is doing is stuff as we speak.

        We will keep you posted.

        Regards

Heheh, I like the bit about '...doing his stuff' <g>

Since the week before last I seem to have spent ages on the phone and typing letters and emails, not to mention staring at the calendar!

Once we got the offer from the Electric Railway Museum things moved into high gear, and Mary and I are off to their site today in fact, to see 'the lie of the land'. As Paul said, Andrew Goodman has been a tower of strength, every question I asked him was answered by 'No problem'! Just what we need to hear.

At the same time as all this was going on I've also been emailing back and forth to Shildon about APT-E's forthcoming 'de-tilting' activities. You may or may not know that we have a major programme coming up to replace the ad-hoc anti-tilt blocks under PC2, the vehicle that you see when you come in the front door of the museum, to enable us to have visitors in the cab once more.

Currrently PC2 is tilted 2.5 deg negative (that means anti-clockwise if you're sitting in the cab....) and is getting worse as the ad-hoc timber blocks either collapse or bend the vehicle's floor beams.

We've drawn up some new heavy-duty blocks that will distribute the load more evenly and Richard Pearson and his crew at Shildon have done a great job in making up four assemblies so we can install them in the near future.

Currently it looks like that will take place during the week starting May 10th, and 'De-Tilt Day' will probably be Wednesday the 12th. We have some volunteers to help that day already, but any others would be useful, if only to act as a 'warning crew'. I'll post on here if things are going to plan on the Tuesday evening of that week so anyone who plans to come and help out doesn't have wasted journey.

Fingers crossed it all works well and we will be ready to have cab visitors during an open day in June.

        Regards
        Kit

        Tim,

It'll be good to see you there, make sure you check here on the Tuesday in cae we have to postpone things though.

Paul and I talked through the Pivot joint business a while back and I took a close look at it the other week when I was there. The retaining bolt won't align with the thread in the bottom of the taper and we reckon the taper is just slightly mis-aligned so the bottom raised section isn't engaged in its socket. The taper joint itself is only about 3/4" too high at the moment, so it's not unsafe as such, just not as low as it should be.

I suspect we may hear a loud 'CLONK' from there as we jack one side up and the taper drops back in! They don't have a fork lift at Shildon and there's no room to get one into the PC2-TC1 joint area anyway, so we'll have to do as best we can.

We've already planned to block up the joint module so it doesn't de-rail during the de-tilting process, and that has to be with timbers as there isn't any other way.

        Regards
        Kit

        Hi all,
The rescue of HSFV1 is now well in hand, Kits hot phone can prove that.

We are just waiting to confirm a few details and then it should be lift off.................. or should I say move off!!!

        We will keep you posted.

Subject: Progress (or lack of it...) on APT-E and HSFV1
This week was meant to be an ultra-busy one for me as we'd planned to install the new Power Car anti-tilt blocks on PC2 at least, and also to take over HSFV1 from Serco, all in the same week!

Sadly all did no go according to plan as I managed to damage my right shoulder quite badly meaning I couldn't even drive to Tescos, let alone Shildon or Derby! The medics have been on the case for a while and they have managed to give me some flexibility in the arm, but I doubt it will be good enough for me to drive until early next week. We'll re-schedule the APT-E work pretty soon and the curremt target week is the first week in June, assuming that the Bank Holiday on the Monday of that week doesn't mean we'll be up to our necks in kids at the museum!

On the HSFV1 front, the vehicle will be moved from the RTC at Derby tomorrow, Friday, by our good friend Andrew Goodman and his Moveright team. However it won't be going to it's home at Coventry's Electric Railway Museum for a short while as they haven't had time or material to make up the track panel for the vehicle to stand on yet. For the interim Andrew has agreed that we can store HSFV1 at his site at Sutton Coldfield and we should move it to Coventry in a couple of weeks at most.

Fingers crossed there won't be any further log jams in our way.

        Regards

        WE HAVE IT!!!! <bg>

Andrew Goodman phoned me and told me that HSFV1 was successfully removed from the RTC today and was off-loaded at his storage site later on.

I'll be going up there next week to have a look at it (and to pay him the moving fees!) and he has sorted some sleepers, chairs and rail for the plinth at the Electric Railway Museum when we can ship the vehicle to Coventry.

So at last our efforts have been crowned, about 2 years worth of it, all we have to do now is tell the world.....

        I visited APT-P recently.

It was the first time I've ever seen it in person. It is beautiful! I couldn't help but pat it gently on the side, and ponder what could have been. I wanted to take it home.

Being stuck behind the metal fencing at the entrance, it looked like a caged animal at a zoo, desperate to escape and be free again.

        Tut, sigh.

I know just what you mean.

Every time I go to Shildon to see and work on E-Train I give it a pat on the nose cone too, and say 'Hello me owd', a Derby style greeting. <g>
You'd need a BIG garden to house P-Train!
