This is an extract from the 1979 BTF film 'A New Age For Railways'.

You can buy the whole film (plus many other gems) on the BFI's latest
compilation Volume 7 "The Age of the Train"

Just heard from RAW TV that their programme about the APT will be broadcast on Channel
5 UK soon See below...

Brits Who Made The Modern World
five
Friday, June 27th, 2008
7:30pm to 8:00pm

Tilting Trains.
Documentary series looking at the untold stories of British scientific innovations. Peter
Snow traces the history of the UK's experimental tilting trains of the 1970s and 80s. The
Advanced Passenger Trains were intended to rival France's TGV and Japan's bullet train,
but negative press and complaints about motion sickness helped scupper the project
before it could get going.

off on the 20th with an episode on F1, presumably featuring Lotus from the

Asking quite a lot I know but I have found two photos of set 370 004
working a test train through Clay Cross in June 1979. It is running as
four cars: Driving Trailer, Buffet, unknown, Brake + test vehicles.

Photos of set 4 also show a buffet behind the driving trailer at the
RTC in July 1979, Litchurch Lane open day in September 1979 and Crewe
Works open day in September 1979.

The third coach in the rake is the main problem as no first class or
buffet stripes were applied to the stock in the first year or so.

Has anyone got the four car consist for set 4 during this time period?

Many thanks in anticipation,

Graham Harris

That's because there's been nothing to report.......

Indeed, there's been nothing to report for some years on both trains for
various reasons.

For the E-Train it's because since we moved the train to Shildon there's
been no chance of any work being carried out as the NRM didn't see fit to
provide any facilities for that until recently. Only this week have we been
given news that we can re-start workgroups on the train, but of course that
needs planning, manpower and tools etc.

As I understand it, the new management at The Railway Age have not seen fit
to re-make contact with the P-Train Support Group, and are currently using
a new group of totally inexperienced volunteers to try and work on the
P-Train there.

Subject: APT-E dimensions
Hi all,

I am the new boy on the block and I joined because I am currently
collecting information so that I can build a 10 mm scale (G1) model
of the APT-E.

Can anyone tell me the following dimensions:

a) The length from the front of the PC to the middle of the doors in
the articulated unit.

b) The length of the TC from the middle of the doors in one articated
unit to the middle of the doors on the next.

c) The maximum width of the units.

d) The maximum height from the exhaust to the top of the rails.

Many thanks,

Yours,

Alan Coombe

Seems like I was a bit premature asking my questions. Found what I was looking for starting in message 2157.

Subject: Drawings
Hi all,

I have enlarged the 3mm drawing by David Hart to 10mm. According to me it is actually intended to be 4mm scale. Enlarging it 2.5X gives the correct wheel centres on the front bogie and the correct roof height. Unfortunately the length of the PC comes out at 73.5 feet and the TC 68 feet measured along the sides. The drawings obviously lack detail but I thought I might be able to use the blow ups to design the skeleton of the units - no such luck. It does look impressive printed out though. Final model should be of the order of 2.7 metres long.

The 66 feet length of the PC and the 60 feet of the TC - is that measured to the ends of the sides or to perpendiculars dropped from the extremes of the roof etc?

If you fiddle with the pixel count on the Andy Arthur drawing so that the proportions of height to front bogie wheel centres are correct then the scaled out length is about 68 feet. I think that drawing could be used to make something that at least looked right - no I will not be putting in all those rivets!

Alan,

>I have enlarged the 3mm drawing by David Hart to 10mm. According to me it

That's because they ARE 4 mmm scale, that's OO in UK parlance, and I have
the original drawing. Who mentioned 3 mm? That would make it TT scale,
which is very rarely modelled these days.

>Enlarging it 2.5X gives the correct wheel centres on the front bogie and

Why is that unfortunate? Looks about right to me, but it sounds like your
drawings are slightly warped somewhere. The 68 ft figure for the TC is from
the c/l of the joint module to the c/l of the opposite joint mdoule. Using
that point as a reference the PCs are 75.6 ft long. I did my own drawing of
the PC in 1971, measured from the as-delivered frameworks, and that's
almost exactly the same as the Hart drawings. The main difference is that
mine were measured with SA bogies instead of the later E1Ts, but they only
differed in wheelbase as far as the length dimensions were concerned.

>The drawings obviously lack detail but I thought I might be able to use

What sort of skeleton are you talking about? If it's the internal framework
of the PCs, most of that never got close enough to the skin to be visible
and as the TCs were monocoque contsruction there wasn't a skeleton anyway.

>The 66 feet length of the PC and the 60 feet of the TC - is that measured

Where did those figures come from? Both sound too short to me by quite a
long way.

Hi Kit,

Thanks for replying - I have put the answers to your questions etc in the text.

I am starting from very little technical knowledge of the APT-E so tend to accept what I read on a site such as this. Intuitively I thought 66 & 60 ft was too short because a Mk 1 coach is 64.5 ft long and the ATP-E looked sleaker.

Can you tell me what the wheel base of the shared bogies was?

This input from you is very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

In the files section of this site: "apt.zip APT-E 3mm drawing by David Hart" - I think David was into 3mm scale.

The PC measures out at 75.5 cm or 75ft 6" to the C/L of the joint module. However the TC comes out at 72.5 cm - Hugh Williams says the window sections were 7 ft modules but the drawing shows the windows on 7.5 cm centres - were the modules mounted in a 6" framework?

My intention is to mount the bogies onto a steel box section ladder frame to which the shells will be mounted via gimbals so that they can tilt. It is my intention to make the tilt proportional to the curve and to the speed - the latter by using the speed control signal for the motors.

66 ft comes from message 2157 - message 2159 repeats the 66 ft but corrects the mm measurement to 23050mm - which converts to 75.6 ft! The 60 ft is in the messages somewhere.

Hi all,

Kit, I have just unzipped the original file again - checked the length of TC whilst still in the 4mm scale state and get 29 cm (done in the computer not by printing). That is 72.5 cm in 10mm scale or 72ft 6". Nowt wrong with my scaling up and printing of TC.

    Hi all,

Had another look at the TC section of the drawing.

The side of the coach ignoring the joining sections is 68 feet. Yesterday I mentioned that the windows were built up in 7 feet modules but the plan showed a centre to centre separation of 7.5 feet. If you multiply 68 feet by 7/7.5 you get 63.47 feet. Add in 4.5 feet for the joining units you get an overall length of 68 feet.

Attached is a paste up image where 4.5 feet has been taken out the middle of the coach and an image of the windows squeezed 7/7.5 in length only re inserted.

I haven't seen a square on photo of the TC (or PC for that matter) so I cannot comment on whether altering the drawing in that manner gives the correct look.

    Alan,

OK, now I've checked the Forum itself I think I see the problem.

I'm sorry but I was referring to a different set of drawings, not the ones
in the Forum Files section, and that makes all the difference. Give me some
time, a few hours maybe, and I'll come up with the answers, but I suspect
that the drawings you're working off aren't accurate enough.

Somewhere I have some direct side-on photos of the whole train, taken
before we powered it up for the first time, and I'll see if I can scan them
    and upload them as well.

Well, so much for that plan...

My graphics software on this new Vista powered laptop won't link to my
scanner. The help file won't read because Microsoft have removed support
for the previous Help Page format from Vista (WHAT???) Even if it, did the
previous drivers for the scanner/printer don't work over a network as I'm
    using Vista.

There must be some advantage in using Vista but I'm damned if I can see any
    at this stage. <sigh>

    Kit,

Microsoft have been obliged to create a perceived advantage by preventing
almost all shipments of OEM XP rather earlier than expected.

Is there anything else that would help? I've got most of the early
publications in the loft and a scanner that (touch wood) works.

    Hi all,

Kit, now that I have got the TC section of the drawing to the correct length I have got sufficient info to make up the skeleton including the tilt mechanism and power bogies. Need the wheel centres on the shared bogies to be able make them. Definitely not got enough info to make up the cosmetic shells, bogie sides etc. Wont be cutting metal yet because I still have to finish my Wainwright class C G1 steamer - if the rain stops it might run on air today.

David, all I really need at the moment is a good detailed drawing and they appear to be a bit like hens teeth. Kit is my best (only) bet at the moment so if you liaise with him it would help. There is no problem with drawings for the other BR GT locos - I have 5 for WR 18000, 2 for WR 181000 and 3 for GT3 - even with the resources in the Ashford library I couldn't find drawings or much info on APT-E.

Gauge 1 guys makes us sound 6 cm high!

Yes I find Vista a pain - lots of programs I like will not run in it and a scanner in the loft for the same reason. If I had the wit I would set the computer for dual boot with Win 98 SE - at least that would give a proper MSDos.

    Alan,

I've managed to get my scanner to talk to my laptop now and I've done a
rough scan of the James Henderson drawings, the one's I've been on about
    previously.

They've faded and yellowed with time so they'll need some considerable
editing before they are in a state to archive, but I'm on the case. To do a
decent job I'll need to do a high resolution scan which will make the
editing even longer, but it'll be worth it in the end, trust me <g>

The articulated bogies on the drawing you have are the Swinging Arm
versions, and E-Train only made it's inaugural main-line run using those.
All subsequent runs used the slightly longer wheelbase E1T bogie, which
looks substantially different. The SA bogie wheelbase was approx. 2450 mm
whereas the E1T bogie's wheelbase was about 2700 mm, around 10" longer. Of
course only E-Train pedants like me would know that. <g>

I'll post progress reports on the editing as I go.

I bumped into Alan Wells from P-Train Commissioning Team today.

Alan's not on-line, which is shame, but he still has his old Wurzel (West
Country) accent after 40 years in Derby.

He'd been over to Crewe and tripped over the P-Train they have there, and
one of the present refurbishment team. They took a walk down the train and
Alan was surprised (but not critical) at how little they knew. For example
he had no idea there were diesel generator sets on board. Alan could tell
the guy what was behind each equipment bay door before he opened it. Just
    hope he took notes!
