One point about the APT at Crewe Heritage Centre...

The train has little more connection with the town than the aircraft
that fly over on the way to Manchester airport. As a Derby built unit
why isn't it preserved there? OK some of them were based at Crewe
ETD, but so were many other more successful locos. The APT was an
abyssmal failure and waste of taxpayer's money which would have been
better spent upgrading the line for conventional trains to run on -
all at the same speed.

Unless they have dedicated tracks any trains travelling at
significantly higher (or lower) speeds than the rest of traffic will
only cause timetabling problems and reduce the overall capacity of
the route by requiring large headways for safety and leaving vacuums
of empty track behind where nothing else keeps up with them.

Talking to various people at the heritage centre reveals that the
APT's last repaint was a botch job and they don't have the resources
available to repaint it.

"Last repaint a botch job" ??? = I thought it looked absolutely
brilliant when it was repainted in 2002.

Of course those at the Railway Age who are saying this have a vested
interest, in that they don't want to fork out to repaint P Train.

It's a bit like BR's line closing policy, you cancel half the services and
ensure the ones left over run at silly times. Then you say there's not
enough passenger usage on the route to warrant keeping it open and then
close the line. A self-fulfilling prophesy...........

Andy,

>P.S How did the APT presentation go last night?<

Excellent, the audience were intelligent, asked good questions and seemed
to enjoy the hilarious bits as well.

Even better was that Martin Collins was there too, so I was able to pass
the brake related questions on to him <g>

I rather pushed my luck by leaving my notes in the car by mistake, and it
was parked miles away, so I elected to go in blind as it were. It went OK,
I just missed my usual accurate dates for various events etc, and no-one
complained too much.

I'll let Paul report on our meeting about E-Train at the NRM yesterday, but
one thing that came from it was that I may be doing a longer version of the
APT Show at the NRM for the Friends and others some time over the winter.

I doubt there would be any tickets as such. The NRM being a national museum
and being seen as an educational institution, has free access as part of
it's remit, so anyone who wants to come should be able to attend.

Paul may know the 'rules' better than I do so maybe he could confirm or
deny my thoughts here.

In any case I doubt there'd be an issue if we vouched for a fellow List

But remember you'd have to agree NOT to laugh too loud at the hysterical

I visited the MRC for Kit's show, it was very good, especially as Kit

I had travelled down from Derby by train which was fine, but there was
a delay on the return journey. I left London on the 10:25 and arrived
back at Derby at 1:15 in the morning....... oh the joys of travelling

Questions:

If I live long enough to both find and scan my 1970s APT pix, where is the
best place to upload:
- the transparencies?
- the schools-and-colleges lectures that I did?

And is there a sensible repository for originals that I should instruct my
heirs to send the snaps to should they not want to keep them ?

Hi all,
The NRM would allow people from outside the Friends and NRM to attend
a meeting, if we said it was ok, and we would have to reserve the
tickets, as the lecture theatre in the NRM holds about 60 people, if
I remember correctly.

Im sure we could work something out.

Can anyone tell me roughly when the pans were changed from Stone
Faiveley type to Brecknell Willis please? Also I know that a mechanism
was included to keep the pan vertical when the PC body tilted, would
this operate on the non raised pan as well? I'm in the process of
cutting up various Hornby APTs to make a longer set and I want to get
things as correct as I can for a ten car formation running in 1983/4

When we tested the Anti-tilt pantograph on 'Trestrol' it had no option but
to work with the pantograph down as it was connected by a couple of socking
great rods up each side. Having said that, with the pan down the amount of
visible sideways movement would have been very small indeed, measured in
inches rather than the foot or so that it moved when at full stretch.

I can't imagine that the P-Trains were much different from 'Trestrol' as
that bit of it worked pretty well perfectly, which is more than can be said
of other aspects of that expleted deleted vehicle!

Pretty early I would think. As I recall, the B-W was designed to overcome
the limitations of the familar S-F type at high speed.

The pan anti-tilt mechanism was designed by Dr David Boocock, head of the
APT-P Design. He came into Lathkill House one day with a model built from
Meccano. It sat on a filing cabinet for a long time until somebody asked
David when his lads wanted their Meccano back. David took the project very
seriously, and replied, shocked, "It's MY Meccano."

The mechanism is purely passive (no actuators) and is basically the same as
the tilting mechanism, but upside down. I can explain if further if anyone
cares. It lets the pantograph rise and fall with the power car body while
almost cancelling out its tilt and roll movements. There was a lot of
head-scratching in the Mechanical Design drawing office before David's
simple and elegant solution.

On an unsprung model, just make the pan platform rigid with the bogie frame
below.

Certainly looks it, and the 399 no. is just about the highest one issued.
My red one was about no. 160 or so, but it's long gone. He's dead right
about the colours though, I still have my black one.

I may even bid for it <g>

Subject: Advanced Passenger Train film footage.
Dear group members,
I have just rekindled my interest in trains in general, and the APT was
a train I used to see from my school whilst in classes or on school
breaks. At the time I did not have a camera or video so did not obtain
any archive footage. However I did collect newspaper cuttings which I
have scanned to my PC.
Looking on that well known internet auction site I have found video
footage but it has reached an expensive price. Is there any company out
there which could re-release some APT action on DVD format at a
reasonable price? If not I am appealing through the group if any one
can help me to obtain video/dvd footage for personal viewing only. ( I
hope group owner is OK with this sort of question.) I am happy to
obtain TV recordings.
I thank all,
Robert

Robert,

Thanks for the post. I recently bid on an APT video, which I believe
ran to about 30mins. but ended up selling for about £50.

There seems to be a disappointing lack of APT footage available and
I'd definitely be interested in tracking some down. I wonder if the
BBC has anything in its archives - which should be available for
public consumption.

For your information, a website called trainspotting.tv is selling a
DVD of their Sky series, which includes an episode on APT at the
Crewe Heritage Centre. I've never seen it, but this might include
some original footage. However, I think there is only about 15 mins
on the APT and the DVD isn't cheap.

Also, you might want to check out this youtube video, which contains
some cool footage...

Anyway, keep in touch regarding your progress.

Cheers, Rob.

I have, from the inside as it were. <g>

I don't think the Trainspotting APT section includes any running footage,
apart from just a glimpse. When they filmed the session at Crewe they were
all talking about 'doing it all in one session'. As you say it lasts about
15-20 mins, maybe 25 at best, and most of it is our discussions of 'why'
and 'how' etc.

I have a copy of the episode of Trainspotting that includes APT. The
article lasts 5 minutes and contains:

Internal view of 1st class passenger vehicle at Crewe.
Internal and external views at Crewe.
APT-E.
External approaching view at track level negotiating a reverse curve.
Internal cab view (looking ahead) negotiating a curve with some tilt.
Chase view from the air.

I shall try get it online within the next few days.

Kit,

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, we'll get a peak at Alan's video
once it's loaded up.

Don't forget the 'Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time' video in
the files section, and this YouTube video (note the moving horizon
behind the guy being interviewed!):

Now that's odd. Does it have a large chunk in the middle with me sitting in
the cab explaining how BR got it all wrong? <g>

And it should start with Mark Found walking down the carriage and sitting
down talking about a cup of coffee that's sitting on a table.

Maybe there are two episodes about APT?

Yep, that's the one Kit.

The guy at the start with the coffee is Mark Found.

Later in the article, when inside APT-P's cab and talking about the
APT-E tilt system, you make the utterly brilliant statement "it was
probably the highest performance tilt system in any train that's ever
been built anywhere"!

It's definitely only 5 minutes long, so perhaps there are two versions
as you say.
