Hi Andy et all, Is it just me or what - Does somebody not even have the
hindsight that the seats could be placed in storage for re-fitting at a
later time and just cover over the cleared deck area with 3mm Plywood,
that will allow fitting of the seats at a later time, that is where we
can save thousands of pounds later on in the project a) To find a new
home and b) potentially allow for her to "RUN".

    Subject: Future of the APT-P
I am concerned & worried about the APT-P's future as the rest of you,
however, after speaking to some guys in the know at The Railway Age
yesterday our "worst" nightmare appears to be a long way away....

They don't want to scrap the train, far from it, they want to make it a big
attendance puller. As a static display with half of the train out of bounds
it isn't going to get the crowds in (be honest - when was the last time you
paid a visit to TRA just to see the APT-P?) so it was decided to clear out
one of the coaches (TBF 48602) to make way for a children's party area
including dance floor to generate some much needed income - unless there's
any generous millionaires on the group the train isn't going to look after
    itself!

They did stress that the South facing half of the train (that is still
intact) will definitely remain as a static display for public viewing. They
also hinted that they may build a APT-P simulator in the main hall using the
interior of one of the actual cabs - I'm all for a APT simulator but not too
keen on dismantling one of the cabs!

In an ideal world we (as a group) would have the money to purchase the
APT-P, get it back to its original condition & put it back on the WCML where
it belongs but I'm afraid that's just a pipe dream for the time being :-(

Okay, it's not good news that some original internal fixtures have been
removed (me & my mate have saved four 1st class seats) but at least it's not
    ended up at Rotherham !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now then, don't rip me to bits - I'm only stating the facts.

I applaud the sentiment they display, but why try and do this while at the
same time preventing Rob's group from helping out?

The group probably know more about P-Train than any body of people around
and yet they are almost phyiscally prevented from access to the train. As
we've found with E-Train, having people working on the vehicles with good
intentions but zero knowledge can not only be non-productive but also
downright dangerous. At York two of the NRM fitters removed the pins from
two of the Power Car tilt jacks, despite large red signs suggesting that it
was dangerous, and then complained when the vehicle fell over almost on top
    of them!!!!!

I'll watch the activities at TRA with high hopes but I don't have 100%
confidence that the stated aims will be realised I'm afraid.

APT-P is being treated, e.g. disposal of seats.

Of course I understand that space and financial issues are always
going to be ongoing issues not least for something as unique and
complex as the APT-P. But because it is unique any action(s) should
be taken with caution, certainly not knee-jerk actions.

I have to admit I am not familiar with the set up of The Railway Age
or who exactly owns the APT-P, however if TRA is a registered museum
then disposal of any object be it a seat cushion or complete train
    should be subject to regulation.

If you want the train to be a attention puller then why not turn it into a museum itself.  Turn the empty car into a attraction telling the whole story of the APT project from POP train to the Virgin Pendalino, have films, models of POP train, E train, tilt machinary and how the train would have looked in its different forms and liveries had it been a success, as well as photos, drawings, memrabelia from designs to postcards, as the people then walk through the train they will see the buffet car, the driving car, and the final two cars should be an expierence of a ride on the APT with a film and the cars tilting the journey being shown on TV screens, finally you leave through the drivers cab where you can take photos.

They do this at Brooklands on concorde and are charging £5.00 for a visit.  if you do this you could make more money than a "party car" and disposing of the seats would be worth while as after all P train will never travel or carry passengers again, but we should show her and E train off as they are the first tilting trains at hold records on british railways.

    Just a thought

Food for thought, but the key sentence is this one:

    > after all P train will never travel or carry passengers again

Does anyone - on or off the group - harbour a hope that a P-train might run
    one day?
Because if some do and some don't, it may be harder to unite behind a plan.

Some obviously do. It's a question that returns time after time. There are
even some who would like E-Train to run again.....

My own feelings on either of these ideas are well known I'm sure, but for
the record I just don't think there's enough money available to even think

Even it there were enough money, we would also need a substantial team with
the right skills, and enough documentation to understand what needed doing
    and why.

And our Sponsor's agenda might be different.

I personally would love to see both e and p trains running again, but the only way to do this would be to have a private track like the steam lines have, this would cost a fortune and after all that happened in the 80's would there be enough interest from the public to warrent this as a venture, hence I feel that for the P train to survive and make money for its up keep the idea of turning it into a bigger exhibit showing its history from the drawing board to the pendelino showing how advanced the technology in these older trains was and still is way ahead of its time
and without this train the new versions would most likely not exsist in the way that they do today.  I am not saying destroy any hopes for the trains ever running again but before there is ever a chance of them running raise their profiles and change the attitudes towards them from the general public, then who knows a millionare might help to get them running on the british tracks again, but I think this is slim, after all the Orient Express has had its fair share of troubles fitting in its trips around the timetables of british rail and a like.

I would like to see concorde back in the skies, I do not see this happening either.  Better the trains are in museums with groups like these caring for them than on a scrap heap!  Lets make the most out of the situation these trains are in.

Without the APT project, the Fiat Pendolino would have gone ahead anyway.
But unless somebody in Italy had spotted its fatal design flaw (tilt pivot
above lateral suspension), it would have crashed on its first test run.

If there was a way I could get one (or more...) shipped to Brisbane,
then I would. But I get the feeling that this a) isn't really preserving
the seat for future use (getting it back would be equally difficult),

thanks for the link to the video - very interesting - back in 2002 I
took some shots of APT-E and APT-P together in trainsim but at that

just static (except for the one I was driving) See -

Cor yes, looks pretty darn good. Just a pity it never happened in real

YES! It's superb, of course just like the real thing because it IS the real
    thing. <g>

What's the problem with releasing it on the net? Technical or commercial?

You wouldn't like to email me the files so I can be a beta tester, would
    you???????

Since I uploaded that YouTube link I've got MSTS myself, never having seen
it run before except for a short while at Paul's place.
As I wrote to Paul last night, work begins on an MSTS version of the Old

I have my project on hold as it looked like i might be able to get hy

    heard nothing.

am i to asume that this was just a red herring? did the reported
    drawings really exist?

I am after properly dimensioned drawings of the front end showing the
radiuses and angles. also any propper (not just simple magazine
sketches) drawings of the hatches and underframe detail.

I know many of you would like a model but if things like this dont
come to light then it just isnt going to happen.
AutoCAD wont accept me telling it "well it looked like it was about
this much" (holding my hands a distance of about 1 foot apart!) i
have to put in numbers. those numbers would be fantastically
compicated to glean from the real thing. if i can get my hands on

For those real masochists amongst you, I've firmed up a date for one of my
APT lectures later on this year.

This one will be in London on Thursday October 11th at Keen House, the HQ
of The Model Railway Club nr Kings Cross. I don't have a firm time frame
for it yet, but I guess it will start around 7.0 pm or so. I'll be doing
the 'short version' ('only' 104 slides instead of the long version's 116)
so it should last around 2 hrs or so, but that's minus question time, which
on occasion has gone on for over an hour at some venues!

If you haven't heard of this mad event, it's a lecture with slides
(Powerpoint these days) or a slide show with vocal captions by me, covering
the history of the APT project from my own decidely 'slanted' point of view
<g> It's quite definitely aligned with the engineering and humerous side of
the project, and only slightly covers the political and financial areas.
Bring some tissue hankies with you because if I don't have the audience in
hysterical laughter at least a few times I'll consider I've failed........

I'll be doing it again in Lichfield, just north of Brum, some time late in
2008, but there are no firm dates as yet. Who knows, maybe other occasions
between then and now, considering I'll be retiring on April 1st next year
I'l have more free time after then.

The question re "E" or "P" is important. As far as "P" is concerned,
most of the key microfilm copies seem to have found there way from
the RDDS library into the hands of the APT-P group... Access to the

Hi have just joined and have been reading the message board...one
question what is all this about the seats being sold off the apt-p
train ?.....what plans have crewe heritage centre got for the train and
wouldn't it be better to move it to shildon as i thought the NRM still
owned it ... this may have been talked about already but have seen the
train recently and it is in poor condition...does this group have any
say in the upkeep and if not can we not sort out a group who could care
for it like the apt-e group. i worked on the railways when it was taken
out of service and that was bad enough but i feel it should be given a
second chance and as this is part of the railway history i feel if
nothing is done now then it will just rot away and when we do get a
chance to do something it would cost a packet....when i worked at the
NRM i saw the poor state the apt-e was in and couldnt understand why a
historic train could have been left to rot...if NRM can't house it how
about AC loco group at barrow hill...will get off me soap box

    Hi and welcome aboard,
P train is owned by The Railway Age, and thus is out of the control
of any of us really, all we can do is pressure them to do something
about the state of the train. The NRM couldnt house P train at
Shildon as it is just too long, we had enough problems getting E
train into position a few years ago.

Speaking of E train, myself and Kit are meeting with the NRM at York
on Friday 12th Oct to talk about the restarting of the E train group,
and what we can and cannot do to preserve the train. A tilt
demonstration is on the cards, watch this space.

There are still plenty of things we can do to get E train up to
proper display standard, like putting the train back to gether
correctly, and re-fitting the VIP lounge, maybe a display/video
    centre in there.

I will keep the group posted as to the out come.
