Subject: APT Inaugural Run 7th December 1981
The February 1982 edition of 'Modern Railways' magazine carried a two-page spread on the inaugural run of the APT which took place 25 years ago today! (7th December 1981). I was going to type the entire article and send it to the group via email, as my scanner is playing up, but decided to take a digital photo of each page and I will upload them to the 'Files section' of the group soon.

Watch this space....

Happy Anniversary APT!

In a moment of madness over the Christmas break I took a look at the much
vaunted Wikipedia, specially with regard to APT and then tilting trains.

The APT pages aren't bad as far as they go, (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Passenger_Train ) indeed they look as
if they were written by 'one of us', were they? (How do you find out who
writes the original entries there anyway?)

However, the pages on Tilting Trains ( see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilting_train ) are full of assumptions,
opinions rather than facts and some of these are just plain wrong! Fiat
bought out the APT from BR to avoid the spread of the technology according
the page, what tripe!

I felt I had to put the record straight so I've spent much of this evening
doing just that in the discussion part of the page. I expect I'll be
roundly flamed but what the hell, the truth is out there somewhere.... <g>

One option with Wikipedia is to simply change the content yourself. I've done it a few
times with AC loco information (and I'm not even a "member"). The "following the success
of its InterCity 125" bit needs some serious modifications, for one!

First of all - I really wish I'd known about the group much earlier and
could have helped with the move to Shildon. Pushing bits of E-train
around was a common activity when the train was being put together from
time to time. There was the incident where one of the dollies derailed
outside the engineering Test Hall....

There's a statement on Wikipedia "The latter feature [HK Brakes]is
often overlooked but was in fact just as significant as the tilting
concept, because it enabled the train to stop within the existing
signal spacings. The fact that under operating conditions it failed to
do so, was one of the main factors in the train being withdrawn."

News to me - anyone with any more info on this??

Adam,

I really do mean ALL of the engineering drawings - there must be
thousands of them - and they would not necessarily be free of
charge. They are the original engineering drawings plus copies on
microcard (microfilm). I thought that they might be of interest to
anyone wanting to do work on the train etc. If you could be a little
more specific about your request I might be able to hlep.

Ooh, now that sounds very interesting indeed. Wonder if I could wedge a
9 or 10 car set on my current layout - be a very tight fit, but
mmmmmnice :¬)

Hell, a decent model of P-Train would change my plans for the next
layout, I think I'll be creating a 2mm scale lump of WCML if that happens.
(Thinks: Wonder just what part of history I can twist to get a P train
and an E* running next to each other...)

On the subject of diagrams, I'd be interested in bogie and bodyshell
diagrams, as reference material for a 3D model of P train I'm making for
a simulator. Screenshots of the model so far are here:
http://www.vsr.org.uk/?projectid=6 (apologies to people who have already
seen these old shots - I've been working on other things recently, like
a set of freightliner flats which are almost finished...)

Mmmh, yes, something showing the original pantograph would be most
enlightening. I got what I think is about halfway through building the

All

There was some drawings published in Railnews many years ago that were subsequently then published in an Ian Allan book of such drawings. I don’t know what scale they are but I am sure it could be worked out and changed electronically. I have a copy of the book and a copy of the original Railnews article. I am sure these would be acceptable for an N gauge model.

I also have 4mm drawing of APT-E

There were a full set of stock diagram type drawings published in
voi.1 no.5 May 1980 Model Trains (by Airfix). As well as the diagrams
there were cutaways, schematics and also info. on formations, both
real and proposed. Enough info to upgrade the Hornby or build an N

James,

>(Thinks: Wonder just what part of history I can twist to get a P train

You'd need to change geography as well. There is NO way E-Train would ever
run 'under the wires', they would melt with 10 turbine exhausts blasting
them!

I suppose in a perfect world Rob could have got P-Train #3 running again,
and Paul and Co. could have persuaded NR to let us run E-Train out of
Shildon after someone gave us a couple of million, but we'd still need a
line with only one set of wires.....

I think E* refers to Eurostar, rather than E=train...

In which case, the twist of history would be that the powers that be didn't give up on P-train,
and the rakes were incorporated into the production fleet somehow...

Ah dreams!

Yup :¬)

I was thinking something along the lines of a regional Eurostar service
to (say) Birmingham, with APT-P still in service running fast WCML turns.

Requires two rather unlikely twists to reality - P train remaining in
service, and regional Eurostar services actually happening.

And a third twist, to avoid the obvious consequence of these two things
- that further high speed tilt stock (whether that's APT-S or something
else) would have been built, and thus for pathing reasons regional
Eurostar trainsets would require tilt capability to run on the WCML.
(Tilt capability would radically alter the appearance).

I can't recall that and I was on it for most of it's travels. Martin
Collins and I were discussing that at Shildon earlier today, and the only
time that may have been possible was on the way to or from Old Oak Common
for the high speed runs. I don't know that bit of BR London that well, but
I don't think there were any wires there.

> Did the exhaust ever do any damage? Eg to gricers on overbridges?

On the middle week of the high speed runs, I was being a 'gricer', taking
photos of the train up and down the Western Region line. On at least two
occasions I deliberately stood right above the running line (idiot or
what???) and it was just like standing in front of a BIG fan heater for a
short while. But standing on a bridge I was a lot further away than any 25
kV wires would have been.

Thanks Kit.

There are wires south of Bedford of course.

I remember BR had to compensate someone for melted synthetic trousers once,
but that was just a DMU underseat heater doing what it was told.

Hi Simon,
I looked into this very question a few years ago.
The Rolls Royce Dart produced about 3400 hp , but would have taken up
90% of the powercars as they stand now. E train would have gone like
a rocket with two darts fitted. Fuel consumption would have been
about the same as for the ten leyland turbines, as far as I have been
able to research.

The darts were not used in the end as Rolls Royce didnt want to get
involved with railway development, a real shame!

If anyone else know better, I too would love to hear from them.

Paul
