Well this time tomorrow we'll know if the WCML speed record "still"
held by the APT-P has been taken by a Virgin Train's Pendolino (390
047 for anyone who's interested).

For those of you who are lucky ticket holders I hope you have a great
day (I'm fairly confident you will!). I have a feeling the Pendolino
will break the record but from an APT fan's point of view I hope it
doesn't, however, records are there to be broken & the fact that the
current record has stood for almost 25 years (and maybe even longer!?)
is a great credit to a train that many people thought a failure.

Long live the APT....

It passed Wigan only 3 min's behind the Penzance
Voyager(1min late). There was a "Chase Helicopter"
which arrived at wigan a couple of minutes before and
hovered at the south end filming it's progress.

Does the APT still hold the WCML speed record or not!?! See:-
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/5369808.stm>

Okay, the Pendo now holds the Glasgow-Euston record but not the actual
WCML speed record which is "STILL held by the APT-P" but not once does
the news report say that the Pendo failed to take the record.

Subject: Virgin Press Release
http://www.virgintrainsmediaroom.com/index.cfm?articleid=947

Virgin smashes Glasgow-London speed record

Virgin Trains today achieved a new train speed record on the 401-mile
route from Glasgow-London with a non-stop journey time of three hours
and 55 minutes – an impressive average speed of 102.5 mph – beating
the previous verified southbound speed record of four hours and 14
minutes set by British Rail's Advanced Passenger Train in the 1980s.

Today's record was set by the 12:37 special Pendolino from Glasgow
Central to London, with over 400 passengers on board, which arrived
at Euston station at 16:32. It was the first non-stop run between
Glasgow and London since 1949, and the first ever sub-four hour
southbound Glasgow to London journey.

The nine-car 439-seat electric Pendolino emits a carbon footprint of
only 28 grammes per kilometre compared to the 215 grammes per
kilometre of a BMW Three Series five-seat car. Its regenerative
braking system returns up to 1,500 kWh of electricity to the power
lines on a journey between Glasgow and London through reverse thrust
traction motors and the 53-strong train fleet returns some 17 percent
of power used on the West Coast.

The special Pendolino was driven by Driver Russell Southworth, 40,
from Preston. He began his railway career as a railman at Preston in
1984 and began training as driver in the following year. He became a
traction trainee and driver's assistant before qualifying as driver
in 1988. Married for 18 years with a son and a daughter, Russell was
a plasterer before joining the railway, and following family
tradition of his father, grandfather and uncle. In becoming a driver
he fulfilled a childhood ambition.

The train was filled with over 400 Railway Magazine readers, all of
whom bought tickets following a Reader Offer in the September issue
of the IPC magazine. All ticket monies raised are being donated to
the Heaven's Angels campaign, which is supported by the Virgin Unite
charity and provides specially adapted motorbikes to deliver
healthcare to remote parts of Africa, where tracks are impassable for
cars. One health worker and a motorbike costing £5,000 can help save
20,000 lives a year.

Virgin Trains' Chairman Sir Richard Branson said: "This record run
has demonstrated the real potential of the upgrading of the West
Coast Main Line and the state-of-the-art Virgin Pendolino trains. It
has also raised over £30,000 for Heaven's Angels and I would like to
thank everyone who has supported the Heaven's Angels campaign -
Virgin Trains' staff, the staff and readers of The Railway Magazine
who promoted the train and our partners at Network Rail and ALSTOM
for all helping us to achieve a new Glasgow to London speed record".

Eric Preston, ALSTOM Transport UK Managing Director, said: "We are
now seeing what can be achieved with a world-beating train and a West
Coast Main Line upgrade.

"ALSTOM is pleased and very proud to have supported Virgin in this
record-breaking run which means that passengers can connect between
the centres of Glasgow and London in under four hours, quicker than
flying.

"Congratulations to Virgin. This is a real milestone for the UK
transport system.

"The availability of the Pendolino fleet is consistently meeting
Virgin's service requirements, and reliability is continually
improving. ALSTOM will continue to support Virgin to deliver an
exceptional service to passengers."

formation, dates etc)?

I knew I had seen some info somewhere, taken from:
html>

"This period of APT's history culminated on December 12th when she set
a new London-Glasgow record of 3hrs 52mins. That's 401 miles at an
average speed of 103mph, which had included a five minute stop at
Stafford due to track circuit failure."

Now we know it endured a 5min stop at Stafford the Pendo wasn't as
close to beating the record as first thought!

Take care,
Andy

Try going to http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Advanced-Passenger-Train/, click 'Join this group' and use your Yahoo ID and password.

But you might need to use http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/memwiz to tie-in (or register) your email address with your Yahoo ID and the Group. Sign in on that page then follow the instructions.

On subsequent occasions, I've found that, if you're going to any Yahoo Group web page it is best to 'Sign in' first. Going straight to the web page doesn't offer that opportunity.

So, point your browser to http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/ and sign in to Yahoo.

This takes you to the 'My Groups' page. Click on 'Advanced-Passenger-Train' and you're there, with all available facilities enabled.

Cheers

Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 2286 From: Gerry Bates Date: 01/11/2006
Subject: Records runs
Would anyone like to comment about the following letter to, and response from Modern Railways?

My immediate riposte is that the APT was obeying all line speeds (it was allowed to go faster than other trains!) and was operating on a WCML which had none of the present upgrades.

Can anyone say whether it was carrying passengers at the time or whether the line was specially cleared of other trains?

From me to MR:
I am surprised at your meek acceptance of Virgin's hyperbole and particularly your headline "Glasgow-London Speed Record Smashed" - worthy of the most ill-informed tabloid! In the first instance, it was a record time, not a speed record (the formalities for which are quite different) that was broken and shaving a few minutes - not a "large chunk" - off it hardly deserves the accolade "smashed".

Despite being knocked off its British rail speed record perch recently by a Eurostar, the APT's 162.2 mph still stands as a speed record for the West Coast Main Line, as does the record time for the route of 3h 52m, set by an APT in the northbound direction - an average speed of 103 mph.

One could say that the Virgin train comfortably beat the 4h 14m set by an APT in the southbound direction, but the latter was subjected to several dead stands and its overall performance suffered accordingly. With the mention of an attempt on the northbound record when upgrades are complete, it must be remembered that the APT's achievements were over a quarter of a century ago, when the WCML upgrades were nothing more than a pipe-dream.

Those of us who had some association with the APT get hot under the collar when misleading or derogatory statements are made about it but I have to thank Tony Miles for not adding the usual epithets - 'failed' or 'ill-fated'! The APT project came to an end at a time when it was beginning to fulfill its technical promise, with reliability up to acceptable levels.  It was cancelled by the same Government which gave us the dreadful hotch-potch we now have on the railways, including the spiralling costs of the afore-mentioned upgrades. What a system we would have now if British Rail had received the millions of tax-payers' money poured into privatisation and its aftermath!

From MR to me:
Hi Gerry,
Just read your letter to the editor.
I appreciate the points about the APT "records" and just
point out a few things about the Virgin run.
The run was required to obey all line speeds and speed
restrictions - and of course as a passenger run (unlike the
APT 3h52 record?) was fully laden with fare paying passengers
and HSE / HMRI had been absolutely resolute on no risks to
safety. To break 128mph would have involved disabling or
modifying the TASS system - which would have been impossible
without massive safety approval and very costly re-writing of
software - which DfT would have refused to sanction as it
would have been a non-essential expanse.
So the driver was restricted to 128 max - 129, had it
happened, would have brought about a full emergency brake
application and the end of the driver's shift - if not career!
Also - the train was running on a fully commercial railway -
several TOCs had to agree to disruption to allow the train a
path and their PPM's did suffer - Silverlink were reluctant
but agreed and were then supportive - Virgin XC were
reluctant and almost refused to be disrupted... it was
virtually forced on them!
As the VWC MD told me "we have one path only - if we are too
early we will get stopped and if we're too late its all
over.." so for me the "excitement of the day was that fact
that the run was done within the constraints of a normal
passenger railway and without the flexibility that BR was
allowed.
Having said that - once the WCML upgrade is completed I have
no doubts that a Pendolino, with passengers on board, will
easily break the 3h 52 barrier northbound without passing
128mph on the way!
I spent a day a few years ago at the NRM recording a day-long
discussion amongst the APT-P team for the national archives -
I can fully confirm that the only "ill-fated" aspect of the
APT-P story is the fact that once again the set at Crewe is
looking shabby because the nation doesn't know how to look
after such an important exhibit!
Best regards
Tony Miles

Hi Gerry and all,
I think a point that should be made is, £40 millions pounds later
and new trains, what do we have on the WCML. A service that the APT
could have produced 25 years ago. Lets face it, P train could still
run faster and the most important thing, corner at a much greater
speed over the Pendolino. I very much doubt that a northbound
Pendolino run could break the APT record, running to the same
restrictions as of 25 years ago, but as with most things, progress
has to be made on these things, so in time, it will happen.

As a fanatical supporter of the APT project, it makes my blood boil
that we had something so advanced, and a world beater, but it was
all just thrown away through managerial and political short
sightedness.

Yes, the Pendolino's have been a fantastic advance for the WCML, but
lets face it, they are nothing special compared to the APT. Having
now travelled on both, give me APT any day.

All we can do is keep plugging away at correcting the publics ideas
about the APT, maybe one day, we will get there, and the APT can
have its rightfull place in railway history.

Hi all,
Just watch the dvd with Railway Magazine.
Didnt realise that Network rail cleared the path and no stops, so P
train did a miles better job during its record run.

What does it boil down too......a very, Very, VERY

HOLLOW RECORD.

APT was miles better than Pendolino, 25+ years and they still cannot
beat APT, what a waste of a brilliant train.

I would definitely recommend buying The Railway Magazine this month.

The Pendo would have arrived at Euston even earlier if it wasn't for a
single yellow caution signal at Wigan - ha!

Andy - who has lived in Wigan all of his life but had nothing to do
with bribing the signal man, honest ;-)

I was at Wigan. The problem was a XC Voyager running
slightly late, it had to be "side lined" at Springs
Branch.

I wonder what P train timing could have been done using the same set
of rules used for the Pendo record run, we will never know.

Yes, The railway magazine's DVD is very good, and yes the P train
section is really good.

I wonder if the driver would have stopped if the windows screen wiper
fell to bits like on a Pendolino last week, and they asked the
customers if anyone had any nuts and bolts!!!

Long live the APT.

The in cab commentary was very good.I have been buying The
Railway Magazine for a bit now and find it to be very good. It is
just a shame that there was not more on the other record runs of the

There is no warning on the DVD sleeve or at the beginning of the

Was Mark there the day we first tried to run E-train up the RTC yard?
Engines turning fine, and 600A showing on the dashboard, but she wouldn't

Hi David,
From what Mark has said, he wasnt there. Mark was involved with the
design/construction of the Leyland turbines and installation into E

Is there a final answer to E train not moving that day, Hugh seems to
think it was a dip in the rail.

What was your section on the E train project David?

The legend:

E-Train used axle-hung traction motors "borrowed" from a locomotive. The
gearboxes were filled with the sort of gunge that was normally liquid but
came on greasy bars wrapped in newspaper. To top up a gearbox, you chucked
a few blocks into the hatch and shut it: the grease disssolved and the
newspaper - well it didn't do any harm. Of course the motors were
refurbished for E-Train, and the gearboxes were completely cleaned out and
emptied. I have photos.

When the humiliating non-movement of E-Train came to be investigated, the
gearboxes were found to be filled nicely with grease, still in neat blocks,
still wrapped in newspaper.

The provenance:

Aural History, told to me by the Development Team at the time, and not
corroborated by (or taken from) any written account. I do still have some
Day Books from that time, but I they relate to my own work and I don't
think I'd have written it down myself.

Hugh may well have a better handle on it than me - I'm merely reporting
what I heard at the time from a team occasionally described as a "cage full
of monkeys". But it would have to be a hell of a dip to so completely
immobilise a modestly powerful Multiple Unit. Of course one of the key
features of E-Train was its longitudinal rigidity: if one PC had been stuck
fast, we wouldn't have seen drawgear compress or stretch from the exertions
of the other. Just flailing ammeters!

On the other hand, it was hard to credit that the gease had jummed the
gearboxes so thoroughly either.

> What was your section on the E train project David?

BRILLIANT STUFF DAVID..............

Id never heard the gearbox explanation, maybe we will never know why
she wouldnt move that day, I can just imagine the excitement that
day, and the look on all the faces as she powered up, but didnt move.

Everyone was in a new field so I am not suprised really I suppose,
she went like a rocket in the end, thank god!

Just as a thourght, if you would like to publish, have shown any
material you have, I am more than happy give give you a section like
Kits and Brians. Id love to shee what you have, photo and written.

If you look on my site you will see that David Boocock just happened
to visit the NRM, York the day we were moving her, so we had a good
chat while he was there. It was his birthday treat and his wife told
me afterwards that he was so chuffed that finally someone was looking
after E train.

When was the last time you stepped aboard her, and would you like to
again at some later day.

Thanks for you information David.

Well she would have gone faster if we hadn't revved her up on the hottest

I used to give schools/universities/careers lectures featuring APT, so Mike
Newman gave me permission to take photographs. I have a fair number of 4x4
and 35mm slides and negatives - maybe some ended up in the APT archive.
Also a few diazo drawing sheets as souvenirs of my own small corner, and
some horrendously scrappy Day Books. Perhaps some technical papers, though
Herself hates clutter and I suspect that those went in the wheelie bin
years ago. It's all in store, and I'm not in a position to dig any out now.
But one day I'll take you up on your offer. Thanks.
