Hope this answers your questions.

Rail head to top of Exhaust is 3640
Rail head to roof is 3448
Body width is 2685
Length 66 Ft (nose tip to rear of PC)or 2350
E1 axel space 3170 to wheel centre.

These are taken from the 1970 APT-E Powercar drawing 0/APD/D/2140

Yeah, right......

All well intentioned no doubt but there are two big problems here, which
have been mentioned time after time in this Forum.

1) Money

and

2) Expertise

Both are in short supply, ask Rob, he's been struggling to keep P-Train
even in it's current shape for years, let alone get it running again.

There's also the issue of will Network Rail even LET it run again. As it
has to have 25 kV overhead to supply power and they have the only supplies
in the country over their metals they have a stranglehold on any hope of it
running.

>when will it be ready<

Even if the project was funded already that's not a question that can be
answered. Things like this have a habit of running well over budget and
even further over their planned time frame.

Is Mr Coleman a member of this Group at all?

Ironically enough, you have forgotten the one place with 25kV overhead gear where the P-train could possibly have run, free of Network Rail - but its demise is nigh!

The Old Dalby test track!

Hi Paul,

Sorry to question, but 23050 mm is 75ft, 66ft is 20117 mm. If the drawings
are showing 23050 and 66ft, then we could have a problem... ;-)

Hi Tim,
Good point, although I can say with 100%, the power cars are indeed
66 feet long, we needed to know the exact length when we planned to
move E train to Shildon, at 75feet, we wouldn't have been able to
get a trailor long enough. I will have to look at some of the other
drawings to see what they say, maybe its just a type or drawingO in
this case.

Paul,

I see, if the trailers cannot handle 75ft, then I assume (please correct me
if I'm wrong), that the ROSCO's cannot move the HST/Mk3 coaches by road?
This seems strange for an industry obsessed with reducing track access
charges?

Surely Heanor, allelly's etc have something big enough? I know you wouldn't
have needed it, but does draw the question.

On APT-E matter, are the TC's the same length, or are they shorter?

Cheers,

Tim.

Just had this from Justin

Fun times ahead !

Hello Max

Thanks for your email. I was also to late to ride on the APT when it
was in service. There are a lot of emails flying about
saying that's it impossible - expensive etc. I know this. I am also a
member of the APT Group on Yahoo. Nothing is
impossible and at least we have people still alive that would have
worked on the APT.

As far as I am concerned if you can restore a steam train from
scratch you can restore the APT to a working order. The
physics are different but the aid of computers the APT has better
odds as it contains more modern materials.

What are your suggestions Max on how we can take this further? Are
their skills you might have for this project? I work in
computers so I know how to run a tight budget / project.

Thanks again for emailing.

I'd love to see the APT driving again.

While i have no specific skills i've helped out at Old Oak Common
Repairing HSTs and Adelantes so i know how trains work physically and
i'm not too bad with electronics.

Tim, Moveright obtained the largest trailer they could, and the
powercars fitted with MM to spare, just watch the videos of the move.

The trailer cars are 60 feet in length and top the scales at around
25 tonnes.

Moving a MK3 coach by road, the times I have seen it, which is only
twice, was done by placing one end on a small trailer, bogies and
all and the other trailing behind and a seperate set of wheels, a
bit like a HGV.

All I know is that it was very difficult to move, even Andrew
Goodman who owns Moveright, said the E train move has been the
hardest thing he has even done.

Paul

Actually I hadn't, but it would have to run over NR metals to get there and
I can just see that happening...........

Are they going to close Old Dalby then? I hand't heard that, but a few

It doesn't need to run under power on NR though, or with people in it.
NR might be more amenable to it's movement over their track if it was
merely being hauled...

IIRC the argument went something like "Well, we don't have anything to
do with it at this instant, so having just electrified it and double
tracked a large part of it for the last set of development work, we'll
just rip it up then..."

Doubt whether the author is on here, but if he can stand a bit of

Hi all

I am considering obtaining a Mardyke HST125, which
will be 7.25" gauge and electric motors rather than
fuel-powered. Whilst unsuited for our 20' radius
curves, I intend to use it for visiting other lines.

I would be very interested to know if there are any
other people on this list who have similar Mardyke
locos and stock, and what their experiences are of
them. Are they stable, are spares easy/expensive to
come by, are they simple to maintain; and is there an
unofficial group of Mardyke owners-club people?
Certainly a dummy power-car is on my list of "wants".

I know of only two other Mardyke 125 units - one at
Lappa Valley and one at Strand Miniature Railway. Are
there any more, or even any APT units still around
(apart from the Lappa Valley one)? I have heard one
was used for a BR promo video - is this still
operating somewhere?

Hm, I wonder how they are going to do that. The speed limits north of Crewe
are lower now than they were then, at least as far as APTs/Pendelinos are
concerned. Not only that, the Penedlino is short a few mph on the APT's

hmmm... With Branson at the controls??? - just to add to the fun!

To beat the record Virgin have to attain an average speed of greater
than 104mph over the entire run. (well over 103.77154 to be exact)

NR and the SRA would go ballistic if virgin even asked for an
allowance to break the speed limit. The Key to it if Virgin are to
try this is a very clear line, (say 20 minutes headway all the way to
Glasgow) A lively pendo set, (IE well run but not overtired traction
motors) and a very good driver (One who knows the road and how to get
the most speed out of the line)

The real key to this is they've picked the slower of the two APT timings
to beat - the southbound run. That gives them an extra 26 minutes to
play with.

The other factor that will be important is the WCML itself - which has
just had a load of money spent on it, and linespeeds have been raised in
some key areas, which will help on the timings. While the max speed for
the pendo would be 125mph rather than 155mph, there is more track where
this can be achieved now than there was previously.

I don't think the train itself is going to be a factor though. While the
pendo is ultimately slower, and also has less tilt capability, a 9 car
pendo with ~6800hp is marginally better in terms of power to weight
ratio to a 14 car APT with ~8000hp. At high speeds, there isn't going to
be a lot of difference. At lower speeds (i.e. very rarely on this run),
there is a significant advantage to the pendo's distributed power,
giving an improvement in low down acceleration due to more adhesive weight.

In the current regulatory climate, I'm pretty sure that a hypothetically
still in service APT, a hypothetically tilt fitted 91+MkIV rake, a
pendo, or maybe even a voyager, could do this run, and all come out with
similar timings. Differences in the spec of the train will not affect
the outcome of the run anywhere near as much as the work on the track.

Subject: Re: Re: Glasgow - London record breaking?
Someone asked how they could get on the train - here is an extract from
Railway Magazine, kindly supplied to me by Ralph Rawlinson for my weekly
newsletter...

On 22 September VIRGIN Trains is to make an official attempt at breaking
the record for the fastest journey ever from Glasgow to London on the West
Coast Main Line - and, in an exciting, exclusive and unprecedented
development, readers of "Railway Magazine" are to be allowed on board!

This once-in-a-lifetime venture will feature a hand-picked, specially-
prepared 'Pendolino', which will attempt to run non-stop from Glasgow to
Euston in under four hours.

If it achieves:
3 hours 59 minutes, it will become the first train ever to run southbound
between the capital (sic) cities in under four hours.

3 hrs 58 minutes, it will establish a new West Coast record by setting an
average speed of more than 100mph for the full 401-mile route.

3hrs 52 minutes, it will break the all-time West Coast record, which was
set by British Rail's Advanced Passenger Train (on a northbound run) in
1982!

Further details can be found in the new edition of "Railway Magazine" or
by telephoning 020 7261 5821 (or 5797 or 7541).

Credit card are bookings now open, and the cost, with proceeds to Virgin
Trains nominated charity is £59.99 second class, £99.99 first class.

No discounts, not even for "Railway Magazine" staff - they pay full price.
Virgin Trains staff on board, will be volunteers for the day.

Cheers, Howard.

Subject: INTERCITY STORY - BOOK
Dear all

with regard to the speed record of APT I have found that I had
previously thought that the 3hr 52m journey took place in December 1984
unfortunately I didn't record where this info came from.

I wonder if it was in The InterCity Story book ?? - this has gone
missing from the library in Cheshire so I can't check :-(

Does anyone here have a copy of this book ?

Thanks in advance

Any more info about the record runs would be appreciated

>Rob Kevin in Toronto here.I seem to recal from what Ihave read it may
haindeed have been December of 82.
if Ialso recall reading that thejourney was difficult for the railfans
trtying to time the run , as it seems to have taken place in the
eveningafter dark so it was difficult for the amature"inspectors to see
the time -ing marks!
IIrecal correctly aon a section of the line BR authorized 135 miles
per hour so if the 3:52 record could be broken within the line limmit
as they aim for it would be an impresive achevment indeed!
