Just a quick reminder that this Sunday the last part of TRAINS will be
broadcast on Channel 4 at 17:30 this one should include the APT - PW
has already said that he 'saved' the APT-P (NOT true) so we wait to
see what will be said in this episode.

I'm trying to determine the correct illumination of the lights at
the front and rear of an APT-P.

Some photos show two, three, or four white lights at the front, and
one or two red lights at the rear.

Why so many configurations and which is the `norm'?

Hi Gang;

AIUI the APT-P was meant to be booked on a compulsory
reservation/boarding pass system so that there would *never* be
standing passengers.....

It appears thats its Thralls fault, they dont want the NRm to use
there yard too much...........!!!

Sadly, yes, thats correct, the PM will not see E train, well, the
powercars anyway. I believe that the rest of the train is still
outside, sadly.

There's at least two 4 mm APT-Es around on the exhibition circuit, or there
was anyway. The one I know most about was scratchbuilt from plasticard and
used heavily modified Hornby P-Train bogies. The structure was similar to
the 2mm power car and trailer car I built. (pics on Pual's site)

There is one pretty good plan, there's a print of it on Paul's site too and
I have the master copy. It's a 4 view as I recall, but little bogie detail
is shown. As all three types of E-Train bogie will be wholly visible at
Shildon that shouldn't be too much of a problem though. <g>

It contains a multitude of requests for an APT re-release, but Hornby

A simple re-release would not be a good idea, but a new re-tooled

Is there then anything much wrong with the Hornby model? Is it too
long or short or anything?

True it looks rather undetailed but then the original is quite smooth
with nothing much in the way of grilles or handrails....

With the better painting that can be done nowadays, a re-release
might look quite presentable.

Nothing much wrong with it for a 1980's train, but this is 2004.

I have an R543 (APT set) and an R794 (APT pack) and I love them to
bits and will never sell them.

A simple re-release will offer nothing new and will look very dated
against modern trains, even with a better paint job. Why would
someone buy a re-release when an original 1980's model can be
purchased on eBay and from some shops still (there is one about a
mile from me)? The price would not be much different initially and
the value of an original would drop below the price of a new one.

A re-tooled version with a full set of vehicles would be much more
viable for Hornby. I would buy one for sure.
Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 1472 From: Brian Johnson Pianos Date: 04/11/2004
Subject: Re: Re: Hornby APT
One thing is for sure.  There are loads of people out there buying secondhand models of the APT, and paying good prices.

Many of us 1980s children did not have the chance to save up our pocket money fast enough to purchase an APT train before they disappeard over night, so hornby are being a bit silly not doing a new model.  The original train might be smooth, but a new model showing fine details, and a better colour paint job would sell for sure, there is also the added help of there being a real train at Crewe.

If I were Hornby I would do a twin pack, APT and Virgin Pendalino in one box, I do not know why Branson has not picked up on this, after all APT set the path for his trains.

I'm not surprised.

As I've already said, I love my Hornby APT's to bits, but did you
know:

1) The wheels in the power car bogies are a scale foot too close
together.
2) The power car doors are too small.
3) The front windscreen and side widows are too small.
4) The 'mask of zoro' is too far up the nose.
5) The first small window back from the nose should not have a silver
surround.
6) There is way too much space around the bogies and insufficient
body above the bogies.
7) The red body side stripe is too narrow and the 'yellow' nose is
too orange.

But I can honestly say that I've never had a tilt failure or a
locking brake.

I think a new design would have to be the thing.

Just getting the coaches and powercar the correct length would help.

Id love to see a full set running.

As usual it comes down to money.

When the original Horny P-Train was released there was a pretty good chance
that it would become a best seller, as the real one was planned to be BR's
primary main line train for many years to come. Therefore every kid on the
block would know about and it and want one, and Hornby would make a mint.

As we know the plan didn't work like that, and when P-Train was axed by BR
Hornby did the same. I don't know if they made money on the relatively few
they sold, but I doubt it.

While all of us here are 'hard over' APT nuts, and would probably buy a
super detailed, state of the art P-Train model, with working diaphragms,
correct size bogies, cardan shaft drive as per full size and fully working
electro-hydraulic tilt system (!) the total number of sales would probably
not be all that great. Remember that Joe Public still thinks of APT as
'That tilting train that failed all the time'. He's passed that 'knowledge'
onto Little Joe, and I doubt LJ would be interested in such a model.

While enthusiasts such as ourselves always see a need for a particular
model, the plain facts are that the profits come from Little Joes
persuading their parents to fork out, and with little prospect of that
level of sales I can't see Hornby shelling out for new tooling to make it
happen.

Why was the APT-P power cars not put into the driving trailers, HST
style?
Surely 2 Power/driving vehicles would have been better?
Also, did APT 'sense' curves for tilting?

Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 1486 From: Paul Leadley Date: 10/11/2004
Subject: Re: APT-P power cars
Hi,
The powercars where placed in the centre of the rack because of
pantagraph pickup and uplift problems, and also that the health and
saftey people wouldnt let the high voltage lines be run over the top
of coaches containing the public.

The leading pantagraph effected the pickup of the trailing one, thus
only one powercar could be used, unless the two were connect via a
cable, this wasnt allowed, so in order to get two powercars, they
had to be in the middle, and used only one pantagraph, this
distributed power to both powercars.

As for tilting, yes it did. the leading bogie of each vehicle, to
put it in very simple terms, was fitted with several accelarometers
which could sense the lateral tug of entering a corner, and then
tilted the coach into the bend, like riding a motorcyle. Sensing
the bend on the leading bogie, gave the system a little more
reaction time. This gave the APT better performance than any of the
tilting trains we have now. APT-E was the fastest performance
system fitted to any tilting train, and proberbly still is.

See rob P train site for APT-P tilting systems. WWW-APT-P.com
and my website for the APT-E at www.apt-e.org

I hope this answers your question.

Kit is the person really to ask about this, as he designed the tilt
system for the APT-E, his formulas are used today on many of the
tilting trains around the world.

Try contacting the TV company, perhaps via their website, and ask for a video copy. Tell them your connection with APT - lay it on thick! - and say you're willing to pay for the video. You might be sent a free copy.

Just a couple of query's,
APT-E's gas turbine engines - an 'off the shelf' item, or specially made?
What state are they in now, assuming PC1 & 2 are intact?

Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 1492 From: Kit Spackman Date: 15/11/2004
Subject: APT-E engines
Brian,

Bit of both actually.

The engines were originally designed for Leyland's gast turbine truck, of
which approx. half a dozen were made, but never reached production. BR
bought about 15 of them for the E-Train, but driving generators rather than
torque converters.

As we soon found out they didn't have enough grunt to get E-Train up around
150 mph or so they were locally modified by having their ceramic heat
exchangers removed, and the fuel systems tweaked to maximise the power
output. This also ruined the 'fuel economy' (this phrase is used in it's
widest possible sense....) So by the time E-Train was running at it's peak
the engines surely weren't 'off-the shelf' even if we had more of them
running than Leyland did.

As to how they are now, it's difficult to say. There's no-one about who's
qualified to inspect and judge them, although the NRM have a number of zero
houred engines in their spares stock, two of which are in The Wharehouse.
(Paul and I saw them on Saturday)

Hot off the press, you may all like to know that E-Train is now all at
Shildon, albeit still not as a complete train yet. Paul and I have been
working with the contractors since Friday helping to move it. It'll be a
while brfore it's in a state to be visited although she'll be visible at
close range.

Hi all,
As Kit said, E train is now at Shildon, the state of play by Tuesday
night was :

PC1 is now connected to TC2, formation : PC1/e1t/TC2/e1t
Joint module is in position, this rake is now in its display
position in Locomotion.

TC1 is standing upright on an ET1 and an SA bogie awaiting PC2 to be
connect. This coach is inside Locomotion.

PC2 was unloaded and placed on the same lane as TC1, but sadly
darkness fell and the final connection and joint module fitting had
to be called off until Monday afternoon/Tuesday of next week.

I have to say, she looks stunning in Shildon, Ive taken plenty of
photos and video of the entire move, so I will try and get it
collated and posted onto the E train website ASAP.

The entire move went without any hitches, a big thanks to Andrew
Goodman and his team for looking after her.
