Alan,

>Have all four vehicles ever tilted together, in the same direction,
>and in unison? Is that it, is it that what you are gonna do?<

Oh yes, we did that numerous times. Not only on the Test Track and the main
line going round any curve you can mention, but also in the R&D yard when
we were testing suspension clearences etc.

Sadly it's impossible now as none of the tilt systems are operational in
any E-Train vehicle. TC2 is the nearest though, as the tilt jacks and
pipework are still in place from it's time as an exhibition vehicle in the
Great Hall. PC1, PC2 and TC1 are a long way from being tiltable now, if
ever. I don't know how we'd get the Tilt Pack out of TC1 to do any work on
it I'm afraid, it's far too big to go through the doors.

Gerry,

>My guess is that E-train and P-train vehicles are coming together for the
very first >time.<

That will be the case at Shildon if the NRM's plan works as E-Train and the
remaining solo P-Train Power Car are planned to stand on adjacent Roads.
See the location plan on the Locomotion web site.

OK, don't try that, the site won't work................

Paul and I both have misgivings about them actually doing that. The photos
that were on the site on Saturday morning hardly showed enough free space
to do it. Hopefully there is a perspective problem with the photos.

Ive been quiet so i'll fire one out...

Is any part of it going to be made to tilt by some other machine? e.g.
people can watch it titl side to side? (better odds than the below one)

The train is gonna get a total re-furbish by the nrm?

So let me get this right. During the coming week, there should be
a 'first' for E-train, ie, something that has never before happened
to it before.

It isn't going to tilt, run at 200mph, go down Sutton Bank, carry a
fare-paying passenger, meet up with P-train, or be started and
driven to its new site. We know that Ian Ellis was 'warm' with one
or more of:

1) One of the power cars will be temporarily put on display in the
Main Hall of the NRM?
2) The train will be dragged/moved by a rare loco?
3) PC1 & PC2 will be directly joined together?

Give us a clue before we go mad.

Hang on a minute - what the hell is that behind Sans Pareil at
Shildon?

Ok, I've just phoned The Railway Age at Crewe and the nice lady on

Is the queen going to perform a champagne smashing official naming

all who tilt in her."?

YES - I can confirm that APT-P is still at The Railway Age in Crewe,
of course it's no secret that APT-P Powercar 49006 is already at
    Shildon.

Incidently we've had a couple of phone calls asking about it today !

    Laurie,

    >Have you got the hastings coaches? or the prototype HST power car? they
    would >look good together<

    We should be so lucky................

'Hastings' is 'preserved' at the Walthamstow Transport Museum and one 252
Power Car is in the Great Hall at York. Niot sure where the 2nd 252 is, but
I bet someone on here does.

I'm a shareholder in 'Hastings' but must admit to being totally inactive
after the Museum there decided to re-paint it green! This is despite it
still being on it's H4X bogies, albeit with solid struts instead of tilt
jacks. It's in a pretty poor state after being alonsgide the sea at
Hastings for many years under the 'tender care' of Hastings
    Diesels...............

I suggested that 'Hastings' be painted green on one side and R&D Blue/Red
on the other but that fell on deaf ears, ho hum.

Leaning (excuse the pun) towards 2 driving power-cars rather than a

bogies for the "unpowered" power-car - only having two motorised and
two unmotorised power-car bogies to play with in total!!

Have you seen the APT conversion pic's on Electric Nose and in

      Yup, I spotted that :)

If you play with your colourscheme for passenger carriages, you can get it
into the correct colours too :)

It's tilt ability is VERY useful in the game, as many of the curves are
restricted to slow speeds, and the APT is permitted to go some 25% faster
around them. In some cases, there is no alternative to using a track piece
restricted to 60mph, no matter how straight and smooth you are trying to get
      the track.

Shame about the lack of servicing in Locomotion, causing everything (not
just the APT, but all trains, vehicles, planes, etc) to be useless after
about 5 years though. I await a patch to make the game playable...

i beleive that the APT-E train cannot be joined to the APT-P power car as
the coupling is differant also the apt- e articulated except for the
      powercars leading bogies.
also both trains have different profiles.

Brian, don't be too hard on BR I think they did very
well in the last 15 years trying to do more with ever
shrinking budgets. Much of the blame for E-trains
current condition, i.e before repair and repainting
was due to internal politics at the NRM. Also don't
forget that by law the NRM could request any piece of
equipment from BR for their collection, they obviously
felt that one powercar from the HST-P was enough. This
is a shame as some of the original trailers are still
in service as royal saloons and as part ( or whole ?)
of a GNER set so a complete train could have been re
      created.

I know that BR wasn't perfect but the conditions
imposed upon it by its own employees and by external
politicians always seemed to work against it. From my
laymans perspective I would say that BR achieved alot
to, the HST really did cause a revolution in train
travel in this country. It is however a crying shame
that the APT was not allowed to succeed and that
Brian, does make me angry but blame must be
      apportioned correctly!

The accuracy of facts in the above are subject to my

Laurie, unfortunately I am too young to know all the ins and outs of the last 15 years of train travel, but ever since a boy I loved the HST and APT, sadly I was still in the womb when APT-E was on the rails and was only about six when APT-P was launched.  I have travelled as a boy on the 125 :-)

This is what makes me sad though.  I am just old enough to know of APT-P and would love to learn more when I have time and build a hornby 00 in full length, as well as convert something for a APT-E model........one day

The train is now in four parts................

PC1 and PC2 arte still in the NRM.

      Subject: APT on TV
Pioneer TVs series for channel four 'TRAINS' starts on Sunday 26
September at 17:30 and runs for 4 weeks.

Programme Four - This programme looks at the railways post-WW2, and
how they faced up to the need to modernise the countries network
after the war. It examines the changes made by the notorious Beeching
plan, and the end of the age of steam. Pete Waterman looks at the
work done by BR, at the success of their Intercity network, and at
the ill-fated APT service. The series closes with a look at how the
countries railways have coped with privatisation, and at what the
future holds for the British rail network with the advent of trains
      such as the Eurostar.
