      Hi Everyone,

Has the APT-E left York yet?  Does the arrival at Shildon 28/08/04 mean it leaves York the same day?  Is it possible to witness the York departure, as I probably can't make it to Shildon?

      Thanks in anticipation of responses,

      Hi all,
Ive just had a meeting today with Jim Rees of the NRM, about the
      move of APT-E.

Sadly, it looks like the move has slipped, yet again, to the first
      week in September.

I have been drafted as a support person about the split and move.

The train is being split using the origional lifting gear, yes, they
have found it, and then by waffer super low loader to Shildon.

There are still many deatils to be worked on, but I will keep you
      posted.

Its TC2 thats outside of the Great Hall, not PC2 (dont worry Kit).

I will try and keep you all posted, I should be speaking to the NRM
and Moveright again on Wednesday, then I should get a date and time
      for the move.

It can't have been difficult, the brackets are 6 ft high and painted bright

      to look for them anyway....

Good news, indeed. I was at the NRM last Wednesday and was quite
concerned to see TC2 missing from the Works.

A quick glance outside put my mind at rest! The rest of the train was
still in it's usual position, still not painted fully...

Are we still on for Saturday?

      Hi All,
TC2 was taken from the works yard and shunted into the North car
park and its being low loaded today, and off she goes.

The event didnt go without many problems.....will try and post
photos on the E train website tonight.

Good news, Kit is coming to York tomorrow to assist with the train
      move and split.

I will keep you all posted.

      Hi,

I have just spoken to a friend of mine who said that the APT-P was on TV last night, Tues. It was on 'Discovery Science' just before 8pm.

He said that he only caught the last few minutes of the program which showed some archive footage of the P-train that he has never seen before, also, more interestingly it showed an interview with Pete Waterman at the Railway Age, Crewe. Pete was talking about the APT project & said that when BR passed the P-train onto the Railway Age one of the conditions was that it mustn't be shown to anyone for ten years - especially the Germans as they were after the tilting technology - this is the first time I have heard this, did anyone else see the TV program / can anyone confirm Pete Waterman's statement?

As far as I have been told , the P train was owned by the NRM, but
they didnt want it so gave it to the Railway Age, Im sure Rob can
      sort all this out.

Later, the NRM decided that it was better to give the train away,
and did so, but wanted to keep one powercar for the National
      Collection.

Pete Waterman, has said many times, that he owns the APT, both at

      Usual load of cobblers..............

Neither the Germans nor anyone else had to 'steal' the tiliting technology,
the sale of BR gave it to anyone with the cash on a plate!

Having said that, it wasn't not exactly rocket science, it needed
application and money and a bunch of people who had the basic knowledge and
enthusiasm and who wanted to do it though.

Before I joined BR, while working in the motor industry, a couple of my
colleagues and I worked out how to do it over coffee break one day. All
this after reading about the project in the press. At my interview for BR I
took my sketches of the 'coffee break idea' with me and they asked me where
      I'd seen the design <g>

I plan on detailing and extending my Hornby APT. I also intend to
utilise the "left-overs" to create models of the proposed APT powered
driving trailers so I can ring the changes.

Was wondering if anyone had any more info/diagrams than there is on
      APT.com?

Replies gratefully received by me...and possibly another modeller
from the Britrail Yahoo-group who I've suggested should try the same
      thing!!

Also - has anyone got a decent overhead photo of the regular APT-P
power car roof clearly showing arrangments of the various power
      cables, etc?

Happy to pay reasonable reproduction and postage if it can't be sent
      electronically.

I've been collecting information about this for the model I'm making - some
of it might be useful to you. I'll have a look through it when I get home
and mail any relevant bits over.

      > Was wondering if anyone had any more info/diagrams than there is on
      > APT-P.com?

I don't have anything on the driving motors - as none were made, it's a bit
of a guessing game. I'd have thought a Driving Trailer nose on the front of
a power car (possibly with only three motors and cardan shafts due to one
needing the space where the cab now is) would be a good estimation.
apt-p.com shows this as an 'EDP3/1'. (Their 'EDP4' would require much
modification to the internal arrangement - and is more like a class 91 with
APT styling than an actual APT motor car.)

Problem with the EDP3/1 is it only has 3000hp, so a 1+10+1 or 1+12+1 car
train (as they suggest) needs one at each end. This is what the APT
Designers were trying to avoid by putting the power car in the middle. Given
that the squadron sets would have had the Brecknell-Willis pantograph from
new, and that this is a lot kinder to the overhead than the original APT
pantograph, maybe two pantographs up would have been possible?

Sticking with something more like the APT-P design, I like the idea of the
DVT in the APT-Q - this would provide a plausible 'continued use' set, had
service continued with the trains that had been built.

I also like the idea of a driving half-motor - literally half a motor car
plus half a driving trailer. This isn't listed on apt-p.com, but coupled to
an NDM, would allow a 10+2 car rake with all the passenger accomodation
together, still approaching the performance of the 6+2+6 APT-P rake. The DHM
would have two motors and cardan shafts to the rear bogey, the front bogey
being the front one off a driving trailer. This car may or may not have a
pantograph, but would have the cable connection to an NDM coupled behind, in
the same way two NDM's are connected together. The pair of driving half
motor and non-driving motor would generate 6000hp, which would be well
enough for the 10 passenger cars.

OTOH, what about an NDM+EDP3/1 combination? 7000hp would get you that
headlining 150mph with 12 passenger cars on the back.

Needless to say, I want to represent the cars that were actually produced
first, so I haven't given a huge amount of thought to how any of the
      proposed cars would be constructed...

      Subject: BBC Railwatch (1989)
Some of you may remember that in 1989 the BBC transmitted a short
series called "BBC Railwatch" that concentrated on the day-to-day
running of British Rail. The series consisted of five 45 minute live
programs, one each day from Monday 13/02/1989 to Friday 17/02/1989,
which were presented by Mike Smith.

I was having a clearout recently and I found my tape consisting of
episodes two to five. Episodes two and five are the best, with the
latter being of particular interest here.

During episode five, Paul Coyer interviews David Rollin (Projects
Director, InterCity 225) at Bounds Green about the 'new' class 91
locomotive, the "Electra". The interview starts thus:

Paul Coyer: It's now [been] four years since you sat down without a
clue what to do, but what brief had you been given?
David Rollin: My boss, the director of InterCity, said "I'm spending
306 million pounds electrifying the East Coast Main Line, I want 31
sets of traction and rolling stock, and I want them by May 1991 the
latest. I also want some for the Leeds service by October 1989."

After a few minutes talking about the class 91, this comment is made:

Paul Coyer: Now this is all very good and great and it looks
terrific, but the last time you lot blew your fanfare trumpets was
for the APT, which was a failure wasn't it. Have you learnt anything
      from that?
David Rollin: Oh absolutely. It wasn't a total failure; knowledge is
never lost, and we've incorporated a lot of that knowledge in the
      performance specification for this beast.

Later in the episode, focus is transferred to the BR Railway
Technical Centre (RTC) at Derby. This part of the program consists of
      (amongst other things):

      1) An explanation of the function of the RTC by none other than Dr
Alan Wickens (Decorator of Engineering Development and Research)!
      2) Footage of the test track and wind tunnel at Mickleover, including
an interview with Clive Pope (Deputy Head of Aerodynamics Unit) about
long noses on the front of trains.
      3) An interview with Roy Hartle (Head of Instrumentation Services)
from within 'Argus' (converted MkIII buffet car).

Also in the episode is a short piece of footage of the 'new' MkIV
coach under test, and Mike Smith points out that the sides of the
coach are tapered at the top to allow a tilting mechanism to be added
at a later date. Fat chance!

The 'high-tech' computers they were all using look a bit dodgy.

After working on E-Train for the last few days solid and having seen and
heard the attitude of a lot of the staff there, it's good thing the NRM
DIDN'T have P-Trian at York. They'd have treated it to the same 'tender
loving care' that they gave E-Train, ie. leave it in the furthest distant
siding possible and hope it would rust away.......

The practical reason is there probably wasn't room for it anyway. There are
no roads at the NRM anywhere that are even vaguely long enough to take the
smallest P-Train and Rob's site is not only a zillion times better from
that aspect, but more appropriate as it's next to the WCML.

      1) One of the power cars will be temporarily put on display in the
      Main Hall of the NRM?

      2) The train will be dragged/moved by a rare loco?

      3) PC1 & PC2 will be directly joined together?

      Am I getting close?
