This badly needs saving and repainting back into an APT colour scheme.

Was this the only one ever made or are there more of these beautiful

Nope, Mardyke only made the one, he did however build a lot of other BR

    Hello,

I was recently chatting to a fellow rail enthusiast at York who told me that
the 'City of Derby' nameplate carried by APT-P power car 49003 was also
carried by a HST power car after the APT-P project was scrapped, Is this
true or was this guy winding me up?

If this information is correct, why was this 'unique' nameplate given to a
HST power car? which HST power car carried it? and where is the nameplate
    now?

    Cheers,

    Hi Ian,

The "City of Derby" plate was, indeed, carried by an HST - 43084 I
think. I think it was felt more appropriate to have the plate on a power
car which was dedicated to the Midland Main Line. I remember seeing it
around St. Pancras in the late 80s, painted in InterCity Exec livery.

I intend to improve the Hornby APT models (the primary reason for my
joining this group to be completely honest) and am on the lookout for

Can anyone recommend sites/books/articles other than APT-P.com for

Also is there a special trick to get into the files of 3mm scale

as these sound really useful but I can't find them!!!

The ultimate aim is to move E train to Shildon when it opens and
display it to its best, maybe with exhibition and so fourth, whats
what we would like in the support group.

There will be a new support group update post in the next few days
    with luck, www.apt-e.org

I am going to create a new section on the website called "MAYBE for
display" with details on how we want E train displayed and maybe any
ideas, "when I get the time".

Powercar 2 (PC2) is nearing bodywork repair completion, a few more
panels and then for a repaint, she will look wonderful.

    Watch this space!

I imagine the APT-E will be moved by road on a low-loader convoy as it would
need to be certified by Network Rail to even be hauled by rail, and that
would actually end up costing more and taking more time than it would to
    arrange road haulage.

To my surprise, the APT-P model at the Derby Industrial Museum shows two men
driving the train. I though that APT had only one chair in the driving room
and that this was one of the reasons for complaints of the Unions: they
wanted to keep the system of a two men crew.

Don't know when it was made but looks like it was at least repainted
with the black window era (1982?). Suggest it was made by the RTC
concurrently or immediately prior to the 12":1ft scale version.

The scale is large! Don't know precisely but the Action men crew should
    give an impression of scale.

Finally, with regards to the other email, there were 2 crew positions
in ATP-P - it was APT-E that had a single position and caused union
trouble. That and a lack of side windows similar to the HST prototype.

Also in the 'ante-room' was a lovely cutaway model of a blue Class 44
(which I regrettably didn't get chance to photograph) of only a
    slightly smaller scale.

That and a lack of side windows similar to the HST prototype.<

E-Train was built with one main central seat for the driver, thus causing
the problems that Nick mentions, and two folding jump seats for
'supernumaries'. These were mounted on the back wall of the cab, just
inside the entry doors, but after the union 'Agreement' was reached, which
meant the train had to carry a Second Man as well, a fourth folding jump
seat was added, mounted on the door that led back into the engine
compartment. This was needed because we had to have an Inspector in the
cab, plus a Field Trials member as well.

Those of us who were testing the train were not allowed to talk directly to
the Inspector, we had to talk to the FT guy over our internal intercom, who
then spoke to the Inspector, usually sitting next door, who then in turn
told the Driver what to do...............

If all this sounds a little archaic and time consuming, it was! Came from
the same set of Rules that meant we had to carry an oil lamp on the rear of
    the train.

    Such is progress.

    Where the lamp irons on APT-E ? !!!!! ;-)

Was there ever consideration to provide 4 character indicators on the front as the first
designs would have been pre-1976 when the practice was discontinued?

    Hi Nick,

    >Where the lamp irons on APT-E ? !!!!! ;-)<

Sure were, and they're still there! On the bottom edge of the yellow inset
bit of both cabs there is a short flat part, maybe 3" deep and 2 ft wide.
There is a slot moulded into the left hand edge of the flat so that a
rectangular bar about 3" wide and a foot long can be inserted and the
ubiquitous BR oil lamp slotted onto it in turn. This had to be religiously
swapped to the other end of the train every time we changed ends, even when
we had sole occupation of the Old Dalby test track, and the next nearest
    train was 15 miles away!

Not only are the slots still there, but the lamp bar (iron......) is in the
tool shelves in TC1, or it was the last time Paul and I looked. You can see
the oil lamp blazing away in some of my photos on Paul's web site, notably
the one taken early in the morning at Uffington Loop during the 150 mph
    tests.

    >Was there ever consideration to provide 4 character indicators on the
front as the first designs would have been >pre-1976 when the practice was
    discontinued?<

I don't recall any like that, possibly because it would have compromised
the aerodynamics of the cabs. I suppose a 'slanted' version might have been
possible, with distorted characters so they looked correct from dead ahead,
but I don't think it was ever a consideration. Having said that, all of
E-Train's movements had a train code allocated even though it did not
appear on the train. 1T20 or 1T24 was our usual code.

Interesting looking train. You may have heard of
Bombardier's "JetTrain" built in the USA a year or two ago; here's an
actual jet-engine-propelled train from Ohio, USA from almost 40 years

That was a standard Budd RDC car with the diesels and transmission removed
and the engine pod from a Boeing B-47 Stratojet strapped onto the roof.

For those of you into aircraft, it was the same pod as fitted to the
outboard sections of the B-36 Peacemaker. With that sort of horsepower and
zero friction I'm amazed it didn't take off!

    Ian,

Yes she is, later next year. The move will be by road, with the set
being split and taken by low-loader.

It will be the first time in at least 25 years that the full 4-car set
    will be back together again.

And that is the nub of the matter..............

'Splitting' E-Train isn't anywhere near as easy as people seem to think it
is, let alone the process of putting the 4-car set back together again. The
issue hasn't been helped by the lack of access to the store of parts and
tools that exist somewhere in the NRM. Paul and I spent ages trying to get
access to these with singular lack of success.

It's really essential that this happens prior to making firm plans and
dates, etc about splitting the train. The first essentials are the six
'hooks' that are needed to lif the power cars safely. Without them the
structure of the power cars risk damage if they are lifted in the wrong
places, and an APT-E power car doesn't have a structure like a Class 45 or
a 50. You can't just bung a couple of lifting beams under any old flat bit
and hoist away, you'll be left with a mass of twisted steel tube and
    aluminium skin..........

    Regards
Kit (whos done it a few times already)
