THE APT STORY was released on a VHS Tape by a company called BCL
Films and consisted of the films E For Experimental and A Round Trip
To Glasgow.

They are no longer available on video and the rights are held by the
BFI.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi

The first page is http://www.bbc.co.uk/northyorkshire/travel/story/tilting_train/index.shtml

This seems to be a rehash of an item posted on the web a while ago when the Pendolinos had their first Press presentation. Some of the words are my own after I contacted BBC North to correct some misleading statements in the first draft. (In fact you'll see an acknowledgement at the bottom left of page 1)

Alan,

I'm pretty sure they have.

I can remember seeing such a photo taken outside Glasgow Central a year or
so after the original APT Service was suspended. The tone of the caption, I
think in Modern Railways, was that they were suprised that two P Trains
should be capable of movment at the same time, but they always were a bit
cynical.

There's a number of photos of two P Trains outside Shields Depot, one shows
all three of them I think, but maybe that doesn't quite fit with your
specification.

There's some excellent BTF footage of the E train at Derby (I think the
first sequence is coming round the curve from Chaddesden Sidings) and
at Loughborough on TVP's "British Railways Traction Archive"

The tape is nearly all 35mm shot BTF footage and is hugely recommended.
Expect to pay 12.95 GBP new.

The E Train clip (shhhhh!) is as follows. It's 2.5 meg but of high
    quality (as Real Player goes)

In 1969, British Transport Films produced a film called "Advanced
Passenger Train". This has never been commercially released. Indeed, it
never even rated a mention in the BTF Library catalogues!

However, the late John Betjeman (Poet Laureate) presented a film in
1970 for BTF called 'Railways Forever' which looked at the glories of
steam and looked ahead to the future.

Fortunately, a very brief clip of the 1969 film is included and shows
the original APT concept in model form. The clip is attached - blink
      and you'll miss it!

The probability is that today's exercise was pure spin! The 162.2mph must have been broken some weeks ago as speed was built up during testing. There is very strong conjecture that 205mph was reached on 8 July.

However, they wanted a media event so it was kept quiet.

      This is a portion of another Independent.co.uk story on Eurostar;
this one is from 31 July 2003:
      -----------------------
"The old record of 162mph was set in 1979 by the quintessentially
British Advanced Passenger Train. This was so advanced that it could
not work safely and never came into service."

      http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/transport/story.jsp?story=429120
      ----------------------

I have never read any historical article claiming that APT was
unsafe; and what about APT's reintroduction in 1982, gaining its own
      departure slot at Euston?

The media got it wrong in 1981 and are still getting it wrong today.

Ive been reading on here about what the papers have been saying about
the speed record being broken and the rubbish about the APT.

Well, it got my bloody boiling and Ive sent all the major papers an
article about the APT, the real story, but I bet they dont publish it
as it just proves how the media killed the project before it even had
      a chance back in 1980.

      We shall see.

      Kit, very well said.............................

Eurostar............ a train that has NOTHING special about it.

I also agree, it would have been interesting to put P train on the
CTRL, 5 coaches and 8000 horsepower.

I suppose there is one thing good about what has happened, they have
finally said that P train held the Birtish speed record, not the
class 91 as most people think!

APT, British and proud of it.

      Yes,
      try www.uktrainsim.com

Do a search for APT and you will find both E and P trains.

      Enjoy!

They are converting the archive into Quicktime - a much better solution
: better quality for smaller files.
          > Any idea when was this recorded?

13/01/1969 - "British rail uses working model to demonstrate their
          train of the future. London"

Would be nice for the APT Group to publish its own fund raising video
          featuring all APT films.

I'd agree with that 100%! I checked the date very carefully to make sure it
          wasn't April 1st............

But amazingly my wife Mary, who used to work in the Research Dept.
Registry, has heard about this and says she filed some information about it
under Dr. Alan WIcken's instruction, so it's not an April Fool. Gerry,
have you heard about this before?

Why BR would put it's name to something that bizarre is open to question,
and nothing was obviously done on the project other than file the patent.
If it had we'd have seen something about it in Modern Railways at least!

'BR plan service to Moon. New station being built on Hartshead Moor with
high speed links to West Coast Main Line.' etc etc. I can see a fleet of
BR Blue flying saucers (with yellow top surfaces of course.....) sitting on
a big concrete pad by a 'Saucer Station'. <g>

There would have been one fundamental problem that may have scuppered the
whole project though. The Unions would have demanded that it carry a
regulation red oil lamp on the back, which in this case would be
underneath, and the said oil lamp wouldn't have lasted more than 1ms past
the first 'controlled thermonuclear explosion' so every saucer would have
been blacked before it could take off!!! <g>

Mary says Charles Frederick was Track and Structures Director, which is odd
as I was in T&S for 18 months or so before BR got APD up to speed, and I
never heard anything about this during that self same period.

It's a good thing the media didn't get hold of this back then though! How
          did you find it?

          Through the media !!!

A brief ('lifestyle') magazine article entitled "When Inventors Go Mad"
reminded me of something I'd read about many years ago...

"In December 1970, the British Railways Board filed patent number
GB1310990 [what I did my Google web search for] for a Thermonuclear
Powered Flying Saucer. By 1973, the full specification was published,
and the invention was re-classified as a "space vehicle". Work was
rumoured to have been undertaken in a Doncaster railway repair yard.
What exactly British Rail was doing developing a flying saucer is
          unknown."

This would make a wonderful article for a serious railway journalist.

No chance for Rail Magazine then ;-)

          Truly amazing.
