And how fast could a tilting train have gone had Brunel won the "Gauge

one side of the power cars with the second class at the opposite end.

I doubt that is correct - the stretched version would have four
guards coaches?! You are right about the two axles - that is what the
number means, and the S is for SECOND CLASS with F for FIRST.

Hmmm, seems just like 1982 again......

Looking at the piece, and Mr Ryan Dilley's pic at the top of it, I wonder
if his Mum know's he's writing for the Beeb instead of attending
school.....

It's pretty much what you'd expect from our media though, isn't it? They
must have a 'Let's decide what to slam today' meeting each morning, and
yesterday's target was Virgin Trains. Notwithstanding the fact that a
Pendelino never IS going to 'break any speed records', it's 15 mph short of
E-Train speed, let alone P-Train, it nakes me womder just what the UK rail
industry has to do please the hacks. They complain that the ROC's don't
invest enough, and when Virgin does spend a small fortune, they damn the
atempt with faint praise! It's a pity we don't have some branch of the
media that is critical of the media.......

And I rather doubt that Mr Dilley has ever flown in '......a tiny Cessna
flying though a typhoon en route to Manchester' either.

Subject: Anyone want five minutes of fame ??
Hi all

I've just been sent the following ---->

my name is Mark Found, I work for a company called Oval Films and
we've been commissioned by The Discovery Channel to make a ten part
series in celebration of trains. Each programme will be half an hour
long and consist of four five minute items (approx.). The estimated
audience for these programmes is three million including repeats, and
the programmes will be shown at the start of next year.

I'd like to re-assure you that we take trains very seriously and that
this is in no way a piss - take of the subject. We want to change
general publics' perception of what people who are into trains are
like.

I would like to do a piece about tilting trains and wondered whether
you might the guys to talk to? I've read Gerry Bates article and I'm
looking for some one to appear on camera to give us the APT story,
and why it wrong (or did it?).

We are scheduled to come up to Crewe on Thursday 22nd of August and
so I need to find some one to appear on that day.

<---- Anyone (Kit ??) want to take it up ? Volunteers please step
forward, or everyone else take one step back !

Please email me on rob@... to be considered.

Hi everyone

Looks like evryone's raiding their lofts now!

"I don't really know what this is or what it was for. It is an A4 card
covered book with plastic comb binding containing 89 photocopied "DIS
Sheets" printed one side. I'm sorry, I don't know what a DIS sheet is.
However, I can see that the whole contains drawings, graphs and diagrams
to do with the Advanced Passenger Train, its construction and its
operation. The sheets vary from arrangement drawings to quite technical
diagrams, graphs to do with things likke speed improvement on curves,
traction energy and power, cost effectiveness of speed, train
formations, internal noise levels, pantograph levelling when tilting,
air management etc etc. Nothing is dated but it has to be late 70s. If
you want to know more about this item just ask. If you're interested in
the Advanced Passenger Train and have some technical knowledge of it you
may understand a lot of this better than me! I would rate this as the
most unusal of the APT items which have come into my possession over the years."

    Hi,

I recently came across an interesting photo of the APT-P which has left me
puzzled, I have attached a scan of the photo.

    1) Can someone tell my why the third carriage doesn't have articulated
    bogies?

    2) Did this carriage actually tilt?

    3) Was it used in passenger service?

    4) Has it been preserved?, if so, where is it now?

Any help would be much appreciated,
    Ian

Because it's a specially designed coach without articulation. The idea was to get round the restrictions of articulation - coaches could be detached easily.

Yes. It was otherwise identical to an articulated coach.

I don't think so; it appeared too late. Although I did ride in it, at 155mph, between Gretna and Beattock, and was very impressed!

    Hi,

Thanks for your help Gerry - I don't suppose you know when this photo was
taken? (approx) Would I be right in assuming it was taken just before the
APT was scrapped? I understand much of the APT design was incorporated into
the Class91, was the APT carriage in question a test-bed for the Class91?

    >We only have the APT-P set at Crewe

What happened to the other power car? I thought it went to the NRM? - can it
    be seen by the public?

    Regards,
    Ian

As you surmised, the photos would have been taken in the early '80s, shortly before scrapping (when all the problems had been sorted out, of course!).

It wouldn't have been used as a Class 91 coach prototype as the extruded aluminium body panels were exclusive to APT and not carried over into Mk IV design. The Swiss SIG bogies used on Mk IVs were also unrelated.

    York only has E-train vehicles.

    Regards

    Gerry

The other APT power car is at MoD Kineton near Banbury.
I saw it a couple of months ago - its in the open and in a
hell of a mess. Anyone know what, if anything, is happening
    with it?

Well, lots to say about this subject.

The P train coach with none articulated bogies was a normal P train
coach but was converted to enable ride data for the new Mk4 coach to
be collected. The research dept did the conversion.

This coach has never been found on a scap list, and upto a few years
ago it was still in the old RTC yard under a cover, shunted into a
siding. I did see it there, but not sure where it is now.

The NRMs spare P train powercar is awaiting the building of Shildon
and will be going up there along with E train, well thats the plan!

Hope this clears up a few things.

The programme will go out early next year on Discovery H&L as part of

five minutes sections on different topics, one of which will be APT.

Hopefully they will let us know beforehand so that those with SKY can

    I was Kits first encounter with APT-P since 7th December 1981 !

I assume that you meant to refer to the Driving Trailer Second as
opposed to the 'powercars' ?? - although the powercars initially
    didn't carry the logos either?

From the official drawings, dates for each of the modifications can
be read, although when they were carried out on individual vehicles
    remains harder to determine.

    Ian and Gerry and Simon,

    >I recently came across an interesting photo of the APT-P which has left me
    puzzled, I have attached a >scan of the photo.<

Interesting, that, where did the photo come from?

Gerry, what was this coach called? I've heard rumours about it, and rather
assumed it was 'Pilot,', the prototype P-Train coach that ran in the POP-2
formation. As 'Pilot' was incapable of being used as a real P-Train coach
(it had some fundamental bits missing, like holes on the structure for the
air-con etc.) without a radical re-build, it might seem logical that it was
    re-built in four axle form.

Paul and I can both remember seeing this vehicle parked alone south of a
station on the ECML some years ago, but I can't remember which station now.
Paul may be able to though.

Simon, there are rumours afoot that the NRM will move the last P-Train
power car to Shildon when it opens, but who would do the massive
restoration job required before it can be publicaly displayed is open to
conjecture. If they spend serious Museum money on it I can us in the
E-Train Group getting upset, when there's a pretty darn good P-Train Power
    Car at Crewe.

In passing, I was given a superb guided tour of the whole of P-Train at
Crewe this week, (thanks a lot Rob...) and saw a Mk VI tilt pack 'in situ'
in the Power Car for the first time in many years. I almost felt a need to
    do manual re-tune of the servo-valves............ <g>

Hey, I've got a picture of that too! I've put it in the photos

Unfortunately the coach in question is in the rear half of the train
and the picture has lost resolution (original is 1024x694).

    Hi,
    Yes Im affraid its true.
Reason, she has been outside with no cover, no work taken out on
her for over 26+ years. From time to time she gets shunted in and
    out of the NRM sidings.

Without major work to all the systems in the train, due to water
ingress and rusting and general deterioration of everything, she
will never more under her own power again, but we do have plans to
get PC2 or TC1 to tilt again, Kit is pushing that one for some
reason?????? It will be so nice to see.

When she gets to Shildon, at least she will be under cover and we
can make a really good display of her, new paint job and stuff. We
have already started work on repairing the bodywork on PC2, see
    http://www.apt-e.org/workdays/17August2002/17August2002.htm

    Hope this answers your question.
