Subject: Just being naive
Hi there i'm a new YOUNG (not saying you are old of corse!!) member
of your group(i'm 14) and fell in love with the APT when i saw the
APT - E about 2 years ago. It makes me want to cry when i think of
those beautiful trains being destroyed and i just like to ask why the
APT - P project was scrapped and what happened to the APT - P remains
when they were destroyed (would quite like a nose cone!) and why were
they scrapped and not sold to private collections?
If any of you can answer these questions i would be so grateful
regards

Apt-e is at the National Railway Museum (Still after 26 years!)

Apt-e support site is http://www.apt-e.org

Hope these help

Hi Nick,
Sorry for the lack of update on the E train website, but I have been
working hard to get the site updated for the new domain, also i
wasnt well on the last workday so didnt take any photos of the guys
working.

We continued working on the roof panels of PC2 and also watch the TV
news item that Tyne Tees made about E train and the support group,
its about 10 mins long.

The new website is just about ready, although there are a few errors
still in it, but Im gonna make it live anyway before the old site
gets closed down on the 5th June.

With a little luck, it should be on by the end of today.

Subject: APT-P Repaint - The 'OFFICIAL' Unveiling?
I have noticed from the APT-P website that no more updates of the current
repaint are to be posted until the 'Official' unveiling. Could someone
please answer the following questions:

1) When will the official unveiling take place?
2) Can the general public attend?
3) Has it been decided which logos will be applied to both sides of the
power car?

Any help on the above questions would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Ian

Hi Ian and all other APT Group members

A meeting is taking place tommorrow (Wednesday) with LNWR and VIRGIN
to finalise the arrangements for the 'unveiling' of the APT-P in it's
completed state.

They will also decide on the logos to be applied to the powercar, as
this will obviously have a great impact on any official photographs
to be taken on that day (s).

Also details of press / public access on that day (s) will also be
finalised.

In addition to the above the exhibition is also crrently being
prepared (I've been slaving over a hot scapel and PhotoShop for hours
now ! - still not too late for anyone with really good pictures /
ideas to have their input (Kit ?? - how's about that 'Why Tilt'
explanation)

Sorry to be so vague - I hope it'll be worth the wait !

Hi All,
Ive just posted the "Brain Porter Collection" up onto the E train
website.

I have encoded 2 of the Western Region intercom tapes and placed
then up for download.

They are in realplayer format and are about 700k in size each.

Each run lasts about 14 mins.

Brian has loads of other stuff for me to look at so with luck, this
section should grow in the next few months.

See what you think

APT and Pendolino unveiled
Legendary Crewe Driver honoured with Class 90 naming

CREWE HERITAGE CENTRE
SUNDAY 16th JUNE AT 13:00

On Sunday 16th June at 1300, the repainted APT will be unveiled, with
one of our new Pendolino units positioned alongside. This will
present a unique photo opportunity from the top of the adjacent Crewe
North signal box, in which the two generations of tilting trains will
be captured together for the first time.

During the event a Class 90 locomotive will be named Driver Tom Clark
O.B.E. In 1936, Driver Tom Clark O.B.E. a Crewe locomotive driver,
drove LMS Princess Royal Class locomotive 6201 Princess Elizabeth non
stop between Euston and Glasgow Central in record time and back again
the following day. He also wrestled the world steam speed record off
the LNER when driving 6220 Coronation at 114 mph a year later, which
was later reclaimed by the LNER. Tom was awarded the O.B.E. for his
non stop runs between Euston and Glasgow; This was presented to him
by King George VI after working the Royal Train. Tom Clark also
appeared in the publicity photographs taken at Edge Hill for the
launch of the Hornby O Gauge locomotive.

We are grateful to Crewe Heritage Centre, The London & North Western
Railway Company, Pete Waterman and the Locomotive 6201 Princess
Elizabeth Locomotive Society for playing a major part in the event on
16 June. To make sure that there are plenty of photographic
opportunities for our trade friends, Mrs Pam Brooks (Driver Tom
Clark's granddaughter) will be present with Tom's O.B.E., we will
recreate the photograph used by Hornby in 1937 and finally 6201
Princess Elizabeth will be in steam to provide the atmosphere!

    YES!!

    Hmmm....I wonder....

I personally prefer the APT-P poster.

As for "The shape of travel to come" - Maybe

As for "The most advanced passenger train" - Bloomin cheek! If that's what Virgin want it to be known as, why didn't they call it "Pendolino APT"? or P-APT?

    Take Care,

P.S. Which poster do you prefer? I think it's time for a poll....

    I think we're all a bit biased.

I've voted for the APT-P Poster.

That's because I think the APT is one of those great Seventies Designs.

It's a great train should never have been shelved and I just Love it.

I think the Virgin train looks great too, modern and up to date.

The poster is good as well, even if they have stolen all the APT's glory.

However the point made by someone else is true, we know the APT wasn't a
    failure,
but most people think it was a failure and using the name APT would not be
    good PR
even if us enthusiasts and historians know the truth.

    Andrew

I think the folks at Virgin took the information from the APT Poster
for a very specific reason, the same reason they have been so
generous to fund the APT-P repaint: They want the public to see the
APT for what it really is, a work of magnificent engineering, and not
what the press made it out to be 20 years ago. After all, many people
who don't know what really happened to APT think it was a failure.

Even if the general public doesn't remember the original poster, the
words "the most advanced passenger train" on the Virgin poster will
surely jog memories of the APT, and maybe people will finally realize
the APT was a victim not of untested technology but of a lack of
financial support to keep the project going. When that support is in
place great things happen, and that is why Pendolino is traveling on
the very tracks where APT should have logged many millions of miles.

Who from the press were there to cover the event?

    Hello everyone,

I've just returned from Crewe after seeing the 'unveiling' of the APT-
    P. A special stage was erected especially for the press but I managed
to sneak on, I will post some photos later.

It was a great day with everyone commenting on how "fantastic" the
APT looks after her repaint - well done guys!

    Take Care,

It was a great day with everyone commenting on how "fantastic" the
APT looks after her repaint - well done guys!

                      Take Care,

I visited the CTRL last week with the RSA (Railway Study Association). As I suspected, they are going to have a big media event for the breaking of P-train's speed record! Intriguing to think that both APT's absolute speed record and IC225's "in service" speed record are due to be broken in a matter of months! (Dubious that "in service" record - a nominal two people had paid a fare!)

I promised to provide their PR Chief with some information on APT and Class 91 records and, out of interest, I was also supplying the same for E-train. However, I have found an anomaly in Hugh's book.

Page 59 describes passing Didcot on 10 August, reaching "151mph (242km/hr)" and finally "152.3mph (244km/hr)". I understood that the record was 152.3mph which makes the 244km/hr anomalous as 152.3mph is 245km/hr. I presume the 244km/hr is erroneous.

E trains speed record was 152.3mph 245kph so go with that one for
                      the E train record.

What are they going to use to try, "TRY" and break P trains speed

What are they going to use to try and break P trains speed record with? I'm afraid we have to admit that, even now, a whole set of British trains is regularly exceeding P-train's British rail speed record by over 20mph, albeit not in Britain. When Section 1 of the CTRL is completed in 2003 this will become a regular event in Kent, even if no further north!

                      Hi Gerry,
The eurostars havent done it in this country yet, so we can hold on
to our proper speed record for a bit longer yet, yes, the price of
progress i suppose, but APT-P has held the record for over 20 years
which isnt bad,its about time someone else had a go. Id still like
to see Eurostars do 162+ mph on the WCML, I doubt we will ever see
that in my lifetime, from any loco on that line.

I think if APT would have gone into full service you would be seeing
180+ mph APTs now in this country. I doubt that the railways would
have fallen to bits, if we could / should have shown the world APT
technology worked and was up for sale. Imagine the income from the

stock here, instead of the other way round.

You're absolutely right of course. Unfortunately, our political masters, of whatever shade, have always taken the blinkered, short-term view and pioneering, visionary projects have always been non-starters.

Another example is the closing of the Great Central line, built to Berne gauge, at the same time as the Wilson government was entering into negotiations with the French over the construction of a Channel tunnel in the 70s.

                      Regards
