    Hi All,
I met Bob Gibbens today, who worked as part of the field trials dept
on E and P train. I showed him round E train and told him of the
    groups plans for the future.

Funny, we did have a glass or two to toast what might have been.

Bob was also on the first run of APT-P.

Bob has some very useful contacts regarding E train, contacts that I
    must chase next year.

    Happy birthday APT-P.

Actually 12 degress is correct, or at least it was at one stage.

The vehicles could tilt 9 degrees under active control and a further 3
degress of passsive tilt to take up any inertial effects. Both E and P
Train were alike in this respect. Whether P-Train had the passive tilt
capability removed later I wouldn't know, but I think it would extremely
difficult to have done so, and I have no idea why they would have want to
    have done in anyway.

By a pure fluke I happened to tune to the Discovery Home and Leisure
channel tonight and heard my own voice coming out of the speakers!

The programme Alan Whickens and I did for them, planned to be shown ages
ago, seems to have finally made it to the transmitters. It's running in
their Pure Inventions series, and is immediately after an item about a
non-drip teapot and lasts for about 10 mins or so.

Even though I say it myself it's not at all bad, nothwithstanding the fact
they spelt my name wrong and their cameraman gets mixed up between air
springs and coil springs. Certainly they don't pull their punches when it
comes to asking why '....the train is in this awful state' so I doubt the
      NRM will be too happy.

Of course I didn't manage to video the programme first time around as it
was already running when I switched over, but they have it on the adjacent
channel an hour later, so 2nd time around I got the whole thing.

Paul, how do I get this transferred to your archives?

      Hi Kit,
About time too, it was only filmed over a year ago!!!

If you can bring it with you to the NRM bash next week Kit, I will
get it transfered for future viewing.

The NRM press office organised this little TV jolly so if it gives
the NRM a rough ride, its there own fault.

I trust you did manage to send Sarah at the Museum your food
selections for the Christmas bash, if not, you better ring her today
as the last day for applications was yesterday.

      Nick,

I seem to remember tales of early APT-P proving trials taking place on the
Gourock line too, but I can't find anything 'official' to confirm it. There
wouldn't have be an operational problem I'd have though, the line is still
4' 8.5" gauge and 25Kv power, and P-Train wasn't all that picky from the
structure gauge point of view, unlike E-Train, so it should have been
      possible.

Maybe Rob's crew can throw some light on the matter.

      Hi

First quick introduction, for anyone who has "Microsoft Train Simulator"
you might know me as 'buffy500' builder of reasonably good looking DMU's.

The reason I'm here is that I am considering building a APT-P model for
the game, and due to the shape of the APT I think decent drawings are a
must ( Having seen the HST efforts so far, which have not managed to get
      the nose correct )

So the question is, does anybody have any drawings for this train ? They
don't need to be 100% the best, but everything will help, (otherwise this
will be based on the Hornby APT).
Of most interest would be the DTS as that would be the most complex.

      Yours hopefully....

      Hi All,
my atempts at train sim APT have never got beyond a repainted
Acela and three Cab Views, with limited animation on them. See -
www.apt-p.com/MSTS.htm - The Cab views are all hires images - but
when doing the animation I can't find a way of doing hi res overlays -
only 640x480 ones that look too blocky.

I have Hi Res pictures of the controls in every position waiting to
be cut up if someone can solve this for me !

Also not having 3DSM or any experience with 3D CAD work doesn't help,
as I currently lack the time to learn 3DCanvasPro, (the only other
      alternative??).

However drawings of P Train are not a problem or photos of any part
of the train can be produced on demand !

      Best Wishes

      Also, more screen shots from
      http://www.atomic-systems.com/~crewevlw/index.html

Its progressing well, certainly muh quicker than trying to rebuild
the real one, much less time waiting for the real "paint to dry".
Its much improved now, and really only needs full wheels and bogies,
      and electrical gear.

So overall about 75% complete, but I bet the last 25% takes at least
as long at the last 75%

      Hi Steve,
Im using the same program that David is using for P train, Abacus
TrainSim Modeller. In the real 3D world, the model looks even
better, smooth. Im pleased with it as Ive managed to model the
ridges on the front nose up to the window, you cannot see it easily
on the piccys, but its there, should look good when textures are
      applied.

I will post more pictures when the beta is running.

      Regards

      Hi Paul

Cool, sounds good. Where can you get it from/cost?
you can use the Print Screen button in the program and paste into a paint
file to make it clearer if it supports it. then again, obviously ure running
xp (same here) and if i press more than letters on the keyboard it
      crashes...

"Microsoft is sorry that XXX program crashed"
      Sure that sounds sarcastic.. :)

      Thanks,

      Hi Steve,
If you go to Abacus.com you can find it there, you can pay and
download online only at the present time.

I will try and get some screen dumps done that show E train MSTS
      better for you.

Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 600 From: Ian Ellis Date: 31/12/2001
Subject: 'Down To Earth' - Modern Railways, April 1976
      The following was taken from:
      http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/irs/irshome/archive/004-030901.htm

      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

      'Down to earth'
      Modern Railways, April 1976

As originally conceived, the Advanced Passenger Train was a highly
attractive proposition. Owing little or nothing to conventional railway
technology, ran the prospectus, APT would bring a new dimension to
high-speed rail travel - but within the existing railway system. Investment
in its advanced technology would save millions in the track realignment and
resignalling costs otherwise required for significantly higher speeds. The
102mph average between London and Leicester achieved by APT-E last October
was a complete vindication of the concept of the self-powered tilting train.
It demonstrated that timings now only enjoyed by travellers on the East and
West Coast main lines, could be brought to areas of the Inter-City network
which modernisation has yet to reach.

Unfortunately, however, the burghers of Leicester and other hitherto
neglected towns, who would appreciate a 100mph service to London, would be
ill-advised to start cheering too soon. For despite the demonstration, the
only way they will get the APT is as a by-product of more main-line
electrification, which is considerably further away in their case than the
first production APT. in other words, after nearly ten years endeavour the
APT is exposed as something akin to a confidence trick or, at best, a piece
      of technological delusion.

Harsh words - but justified. No matter how sophisticated the approach,
high-speed transport is only achieved through the application of large
amounts of power. The 14-coach passenger prototype electric APTs, for
example, will require 8000hp to bring London and Glasgow within four hours.
When the original design team turned down the offer of a 1500hp Rolls-Royce
Dart' in favour of multiple Leyland 290hp turbines for their new train any
hope of providing the necessary power for a commercial APT virtually
vanished. And in the interval since then, no other country has produced a
true high-horsepower gas turbine for traction use, let alone a successful
one. The practical self-propelled APT has been dead for some time.

So, faut de mieux, the electric APT is now with us, but in the process it
has lost its independence of the old-fashioned railway around it. It has
become just another high-speed train, limited by catenary design and the
electricity-supply system to 125mph running, as was outlined recently in the
Chairman's address to the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers. Even tied down with copper wire the APT can still reduced the
London Glasgow timing by one hour, but with what disruption to traffic
patterns is still to be revealed. Impressive though the proposed four-hour
schedule may be, its commercial value is questionable. Competing with a
British Airways Shuttle which can get the traveller from London to the
middle of Glasgow before 10am, when an APT passenger will be hard pushed to
make it 1 hours later, is not a sensible application of railway marketing
skills, especially when one is asking the businessman to spend eight hours
of his working day simply travelling. Faster timings with APT are also being
obtained at the expense of reduced quality of travel and we remain
unconvinced that the balance is in the faster train's favour. Our
over-riding impression of the APT interior, based on travel in the prototype
and various mock-ups, is of a cramped narrow tube, rating somewhat lower on
the claustrophobia scale than a Trident' or a BAC 1-11. An extra 15 minutes
door-to-door on shorter transits would be a small price to pay for the
comfort of standard Mk III stock.

The electric APT is a less-useful tool than the original article but still a
costly one. The three passenger prototypes plus support facilities are
costing over 30 million at 1975 prices and at 2-3 million per production
set it remains doubtful whether BR will be able to acquire APTs in
sufficient numbers to make commercial and operating sense - even with the
intensive operation which will be required to recoup the investment. A large
number will be required to provide a full service while the support costs
and disruption to existing running can only be justified by a completely
transformed service pattern as with the original electrification of the West
Coast main line. And as we have previously remarked, while tilting coaches
are already in service overseas, production APTs are still a long way away.
When APT lagged the traditional railway produced the HST as a stop-gap; now
that APT is only for the rich lines, if at all, could the old guard produce
a tilting HST for the 1980s?

      Yeah right.

And how many of these journos have actually ever built ANYthing, let alone
      a train?

It's all very easy being wise after the event, and looking in from the
outside. When you are dealing with the nitty gritty of developing
something that has never been done before and trying to persuade
politicians, who are equally as igorant as the journos, to fund the
programme as well, having people talk about 'confidence trick' is a little
dispiriting. Not to mention anger making, as you can tell. And just what do
they get out of it? An ego trip or what?

I'd just love to have one of the journos do the pressure test on the TC1
tilt system pipework when we get it working again. THEN they'd know what
      it's about.........

      Grrrrrrr...........

Regards and a Happy New Tilting Year.

      Subject: Re-running of Rainhill 150
I was running my 00 Guage Train Set last night with my two most
      recent additions.

      A Hornby APT-P and a Triang Rocket.

The APT-P was bought late last year and the Rocket I bought last
week, altough I have always wanted these locomotives it only stuck me
last light how this linked up with Rainhill 150.

Both these I managed to pick up for £30.00 each. The Rocket needed
stripping down and cleaning before it ran beautifully.

The APT-P was in a damaged state, worst was the power car where the
motor unit, drive and bogie were missing completely.

A motor replacement was found at £20.00 but I had to hand make a APT
Tilt pivot to enable the Tilt to work properly.

The famous pantograph was also gone and I decided to use a dummy
pantograph from a class 91, As I don't have and don't intend to have
      catenary.

There was also a missing half bogie on one of the trailers,
fortuantely my £30.00 bargain came with another broken trailer which
      had a half bogie!

Anyway, I trulyed enjoy watching these two locomotives with
technology 150 years apart, running around my track and I was
reminded of the Rainhill 150 event were both the Rocket (replica)
and the APT (pushed by a diesel) ran on the track.

      Regards

      Andrew

        Hi all

If anyone uses outlook, you'll have got a security warning when you
opened my reply to the previous message from Paul.

This is because Yahoo! edits messages sent from users to groups.

Because of this, you got a warning as the email was Encrypted in
outlook express (by Verisign) and Yahoo edited it.

And they only edit it to stick an advert into the message....

The message is below as i replied. This has been sent through Yahoo!
        Groups email thingy.

The attachment to the previous email was the digital signature. It
has no risks involved, but just delete it to make sure.

        Regards

        Steve Mosby :)
