Hastings is at St Leonards Railway Engineering, not sure
whether its for restoration or spare parts though. Its still on
its APT bogies as far as I know.

The POP vehicles and Pilot were broken up many years ago
and I think all the wagons used have also gone. Out of interest,
does anyone have drawings of the POP please?

Hi Simon,

>Out of interest, does anyone have drawings of the POP please?<

Drawings? You want DRAWINGS? We didn't use any when we built it, so why
would anyone else need them now! <g>

Actually I could probably do some from memory if I tried hard enough. POP
was two APT-E Power Car structures with no cabs or skin. The cabins in the
middle were just panels riveted to the frames with no curved bulkheads as
on the real E-Train. Later on there was a minute 2 person VIP compartment
fitted to the INSIDE of the framework on PC-3 which lasted about 6-9 months
before we stripped it out. Later on of course, when PILOT was in the
middle, POP was skinned all over, but still had no fairings. At various
times POP had three or four sets of bogies, sometimes different ones on
each vehicle, plus goodness knows how many bits and pieces hung all over
it.

If there's a demand I might be able to do something on the drawings front,
but it won't be quick.

Re Hastings (my favourite APT vehicle, except when it leaks oil that is...)

>Hastings is at St Leonards Railway Engineering, <

Is that St Leonards as in Hastings? How very appropriate if it is!

>not sure whether its for restoration or spare parts though.<

I do hope they don't scrap it, it's a very significant vehicle in tilting
technology. How can we find out and do we need a Hastings Coach Action
Group to keep it in one piece?

>Its still on its APT bogies as far as I know.<

If you saw the way we fitted them you'd know why! Just taking it OFF the
bogies was an exercise in lateral thinking and pure frustration.

The first one sounds really familiar (Not just from the BTF!!)

It was played at the Millennium Dome last year, for the 'Our Town' presentation. However i have no idea of it's name.

Sorry :)

Were they the same length as an APT-E power car then? I
would be interested in drawings as I'm looking at doing a
model of it one day (in its clad format with Pilot)

>Is that St Leonards as in Hastings? How very appropriate if

Yes. Its owned by Hastings Diesels Ltd (or something similar
anyway), the group that owns and operates the green Hastings
DEMU. Most recent picture I saw of it was taken last year, sat
outside the shed and somewhat faded but otherwise complete.
Don't think the sea air will do much for it though!

>Were they the same length as an APT-E power car then? I would be

Yes, exactly the same length if you ignore the cabs. The cabs were bolted
onto the end bulkhead of the tubular structure about 6" behind the door,
and the joint is clearly visible on the E-Train. If you look at some of the
pics in 'The Kit Spackman Collection' <blush> on Paul's site you can see
where the end profile's similarities are. If you can make it to York one
work weekend I can show you exactly of course. The POP cars were aranged
'joint module end' inwards, but of course without any modules.

The model would be fairly easy in POP-2 form, as you wouldn't have to model
the tubes or the counterweights, it's just a five sided box with the odd
window or three. Of course you'd have to incorporate the P-Train tilt pack
hung under PC4 to be truly authentic.....

Well, that's hopeful anyway. I wonder if I should get in touch with
them...... <G>

The title says "Round Trip to Glasgow" - is that the case? (and can you
do copies, please?) (!)

This just says Name that tune, but has a railway effect in the middle.

Would you elaborate on where you got them from please.

Whilst on the topic of BTF films, the BFI are planning to release "E for
Experimental" some time next year as part of their programme of BTF
video compilations.

Volumes 6-12 are in the works with 6,7, & 8 to be released in time for Christmas.

The music does come from R T T G but I could really do with a complete copy

APT.

Subject: Dapol Pendolino
I have now received my model of the Virgin Trains Pendolino. Many of the
details are good but I must say there are some things which are missed out
on the model. The lights have only the Headlight and not the red rear light.
The light above the driver's cab is simply a white splodge of paint. It must
have taken about a minute, at least, to couple each carriage together.

So long is the Pendolino that I will have to re-design my layout which is
currently cramped into a small loft-space. The maximum speed of the model is
slower than the older model Virgin Trains of which I own!. The tilting
action does work quite noticeably on bends

I will try and get some photos developed of the model soon.

From Calum

Don't know aboiut the first tune but I'm 99% certain the second one
is stock music which has been used in several films and television
programs. If it's OK with you I'll ask a mate who has hundereds of
those stock music CD's if he recognises it.

WHOP UP THE RES, SOUND and max everything out in TrainSim and enjoy.

Make sure you have Directx 8.0a or 8.1 installed and make sure you

DO NOT OPEN IT or you machine will be doomed.

Both Rob and myself have taken action on our machines to stop the

please bare this in mind for the next few days.

My machine has had to be fdisked to remove the problem.

Sophos Anti-virus with its updated IDE files is at present, the only

Does anyone know an Alison Dickinson, if so, your machine has the
virus that destroyes machines and sends its self to everyone in your
address book. Trash your machine and start again.

I would suggest that everyone within this contact circle, checks
there machine for internet activity when they are not doing anything.

Ive had various people sending me infected emails through the day..

My machines is safe from infection now, EVERYONE CHECK YOUR PC.

This virus has become a big problem over the past few days.

The virus also stores your key strokes, so password and such should
be changed if you have had an infected machine.

Download the up to date demo version of Sophos anti-virus and the
updated IDE files, install it and run it. If you have it, it "WILL"
find it.

Subject: Hornby APT question
Hello all.

I am interested in purchasing an R543 Hornby APT. Being an absolute
perfectionist, I want one that is as original and as perfect as money
can possibly buy.

I have contacted Hornby about the R543 contents and they say that an
original R543 set contains 4 x R601 double straights and 2 x R600
standard straights. They also said that they are not aware of any
R543 sets that contained an R620 railer/uncoupler (even though there
is a cut-out space for one in the box).

The trouble is that some of the sets that appear on eBay show an R620.

I have two questions:
1) Can anyone confirm whether any original R543s ever contained an
R620.
2) Does anyone know of an absolutely perfect original R543 (or
similar) for sale.

Thanks in advance.

A SECRET HISTORY OF RAIL

19:10 1 December

Where did Britain's railways go wrong? Why has the country that gave
trains to the world been so bad at running them safely and
efficiently? Last autumn the Hatfield crash pushed the system into
full-scale crisis; this autumn, Transport Minister Stephen Byers has
pulled the plug on Railtrack.

Presented by Ian Hargreaves - former Editor of the New Statesman and
the Independent - A Secret History of Rail asks why three generations
of politicians have failed to create the conditions for a thriving
railway.

Nationalisation, 1970s social democracy, and privatisation have all
failed. What chance is there of Blair's government doing any better?
Featuring candid interviews with key figures including Sir Bob Reid,
Sir Peter Parker, Sir Alastair Morton, Sir Bob Horton, Gerald Corbett
and Norman Lamont.

Hi all!

Just to let you know that Symantec (Norton) have this virus in hand. If you're using Norton Antivirus use 'LiveUpdate' to get the latest definitions then go to:

www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@...

for instructions on how to proceed.

I found I had 11 infected files, including kernel32.dll, which were all deleted. A small edit of the registry was then required to remove the value 'kernel32 kernel32.exe', a reboot and I'm up and running again.

The advice is not to open an e-mail attachment with the extension .pif or .scr. Any e-mail which has such an attachment should be deleted.

Regards

Gerry

good general advice about NOT opening attachments, but with some versions of OE this virus gets through even if you don't click on the attachment!!!!

Hi all,
You dont need to open the infected file with this virus, an error
in IE 5.0 /5.5/ 6.0 runs the infected file "WITHOUT" you doing
anything.

Visit the Microsoft site and make sure you have the patch files for
your version of explorer.

Even with an anti-virus programme running you can get re-infected
without these files........................

Hi all.

After more research, I am now 99.9% convinced that an original R543
contains the following straight track:

2 x R601 double straight
5 x R600 standard straight
1 x R620 railer/uncoupler

Anyone care to increase that to 100%?

Cheers all.

Hello everyone, I watched this programme with most interest.

It is interesting that what was being said was that BR lacked the drive to complete this project. Although they seemed to blame it for failed technology or train sickness or something. Perhaps it was Maggie Thatcher?

From my reading of views on the Internet, it would seem that the APT project did eventually became reliable but BR decided to stop its introduction into service. Although all the books I have read so far seem to have been written before that decision was made.

The programme had some good footage of both APT-E and APT-P and some running Hornbill APT-P's.

I though the views of ex-drivers was great testament 'This was the best Train I ever Drove!'

I also enjoyed the look at the Train now in preservation, although it did sadden my heart to have it suggested that all it was good for was children's parties.

I shall hopefully make a visit to the APT-P this year, I think my children will enjoy it, but I know I will.

If it wasn't for you e-mail I would of missed this programme.

Thanks and Regards

Andrew

20 years ago today, in fact 20 years ago right NOW. (It's 0630 in the
morning as I write) the first APT service was leaving Glasgow Central en
route to Euston.

I'm very pleased to say I was on it too, after some months of effort and
letter writing back and forth BR finally managed to sell me a ticket,
although you'd have thought they were trying to keep the whole thing a
secret from Joe Public. It was only because I had 'inside information' that
I knew for certain the service was going to run, and I had to tell BR's
ticketing operation what time it was all happening!

Rumour has it that there were only 13 real world fare paying passengers on
the train, but I've never managed to confirm that. When I boarded the train
I found that I had the aisle seat on the very rearmost seat row in the
train, right up against the bulkhead in front of the rear cab. Not only
that, but the entire rear row of passengers were some of my colleages from
APT-E days, some of whom were still with BR! This was obviously not a
co-incidence, and later on in the journey all was revealed when Ron Puntis
came back and welcomed us, as it was he who'd arranged the seat
allocations.

As we started down the Lune Vallley, Ron said to me 'Kit, you deserve this
more than anyone. Would you like to ride down the valley in the rear cab.?'
WHAT a silly question! Needless to say I accepted and had the best seat in
the train for the descent, mostly running at maximum tilt and 125 mph. The
highlight of the whole trip for me, but I'm not sure if it's for full
'Public Consumption'! The rest of that day has been fairly well publicised
so I won't bore you with the details here, but I've spent some time talking
about it to the BBC in the last few days.

Last month Rob Latham emailed me about the BBC Online team wanting to write
a piece about the P-Train's entry into service, and I've since then I've
spoken to their writer about this twice. I also now he's spoken with Hugh
Williams about it too, so sometime today it might be worthwhile taking a
look at their web site. I don't have the URL for the piece yet, but if
anyone finds it first, please post it to the Group.

So some time today raise a glass to the P-Train and think of 'things that
might have been'.

Hi Guys,

I have just read the story on the BBC website. It was a very moving
story, in light of what happened. However, it contained two
minor errors: 1) that the tilt mechanism could tilt 12 degrees,
instead of the correct 9; 2) that the red tartan seats were 2nd Class,
when in fact they were 1st Class.

Cheers

You are right about the tilt system, but those seats ARE Second Class - First Class has Thompson Blue Tartan covers.
