I just noticed that Discovery is showing it's 'Pure Inventions' series at
last!

That's the show where they filmed Alan Wickens and me walking round and
through the E-Train some months ago.

The show is for 30 mins, and it's on 3 times a day, firstly at 5.30 am (!),
then at 11 am and lastly at 5.30 pm. It's on the Discovery Home and Leasure
prog, Channel 133 on Sky and an hour later on Ch 134. It's only on today
and tomorrow this week, but I have no idea if it's always the same issue,
and I have nop idea how many issues there are yet.

Andy,

I thought that I'd posted the URL to the group.. but a search of the
Archive doesn't show it, so perhaps I forgot :-(

Well done for finding it !

Whilst doing my bit of research for this incident, I was told that
(an) APT had been involved in a much more serious derailment, where
part of the APT had ended up down the bank. Do you know if this is
factual, or is somebody mis-remembering (possibly another incident unrelated to the APT's)

Cheers

That doesn't sound like something that would have escaped the media hawks
of the time....

As the train was effectively in four parts, two locos and a long front and
back bit, it would be difficult to imagine a scenario where 'part...' of an
APT could have gone down a bank on it's own.

I've certainly never heard of anything like that, unless we are talking
about the 'January 9 th incident' where POP train went off the end of the
Edwalton test track. Not that there's a bank there, just lots of ballast
with no rails!

Thanks Kit,

I'll file this incident under "F" for "Folklore" !

I'm thinking that perhaps I should have a section on my

I think one of the better ones I've heard, was that
Queen Victoria stayed overnight in Carnforth...
The date give was two years after her death :-(

    Dear All

With regard to the rumoured incident "where part of the APT had ended up down the bank" I agree with Kit - it is probably a case of "distorted memory syndrome" and refers to the incident where PoP train was buried up to its axles in ballast with a Class 46 after a WSP fault, although Hugh Williams has it as 10 January 1973.

I've just opened the latest copy of RAIL to find a picture of the Pendolino instrumentation set-up. Just to prove we did it better in our day, look at p29 of "APT: A Promise Unfulfilled". The picture shows the instrumentation cabinets which I designed from a sort of Mecanno instrumentation cabinets kit (Widney Dorlec - wonderful what you remember sometimes - affectionately known as wiggly dog-leg!) Like Slarty Bartfarst and his fjords I was particularly proud of the sloping upper panels!

In the picture are my Instrumentation colleagues of the time, Malc Wilson and Ian Earnshaw - some fit of pique, details of which I can't remember - made me decline to take part in that photo-shoot! Is this gear still in place in E-train at York?

Oh yes! TC2 still has it's entire compliment of wiggly dogleg stuff, just
as you designed it. There's even a number of SE UV recorders still
installed in it! The amplifiers have all been removed, but some photos on
cardboard stuck in place would make it look quite homely.

I imagine Malc could get it all running in about and hour and a half <g>

      Subject: E-Mail attachments
Recently, Andy Appleton kindly sent some pictures to APT group as attachments.

I hope (without ruffling feathers), that I might suggest that attachments
      aren't sent with
postings to the group, as this is a VERY easy way of accidentally distributing
      viruses.
I've seen this happen with at least two other Yahoogroups.

Attachments may (or may not) be welcomed by the recipient, but DO increase
      telephone
      time for upload/downloads.

If the group administrator turns the attachments option "off" this prevents
      potential problems.

All Yahoogroups have an "Archive" area, where members may upload attachments.
Might I respectfully suggest to the group that it becomes group policy, that
      files be either
deposited there, to be retrieved as required, and / or that a posting
      mentions:-

"I have a picture / programme / file about XXX that other group members might
      like to see
e-mail me privately / I have uploaded it to the archive"

I have been toying with this idea for a while, I'll let you the
      members decide - I'll start a poll.

      >Attachments may (or may not) be welcomed by the recipient, but DO
      >increase telephone time for upload/downloads.

If you go to 'Edit My Membership' (top right hand corner) and set
your message delivery to 'Daily Digest' this will just send the text
from the message and NOT the attachment, which will save telephone
time. After reading the message and decide you would like to view the
attachment you simply log on to the group find the message and enjoy!

      >All Yahoogroups have an "Archive" area, where members may upload
      >attachments. Might I respectfully suggest to the group that it
      >becomes group policy, that files be either deposited there, to be
      >retrieved as required.

Daily Digest (see above) basically does the same. You decide which
attachments you want to view. However, Yahoo! have recently added a
section specifically for photos so I think if anyone is just sending
photos to the group they should be put in there and a message sent to
      the group saying so.

Thankfully, I have never had a Virus. I make sure my anti-virus
software up-to-date and use a bit of "common sense". When I receive
an email that looks suspicious I don't open it. Okay, I am often
curious to see what the attachment is....But better safe than sorry!!

All in all I do agree with you Peter but as you said "Without
ruffling feathers" - So I'll start a poll and let the members decide?

Sorry, just had a idea and a extra "Arguement".

It'd be better in the files section to make some folders to arrange
some of the things too :)

And the photos space is limited to 30MB. I'm sure that'd be more
useful with more space... :| up/down load times !! (Thank god college

MSTS is very very good, although the sound still isnt a patch on BVE.

Ive started work on an APT model, but as I have little experiance of
3DSM or autocad its slow work, so far I have a brick on E1 bogies.

Some help in making the model would be nice!

We will see APT in MSTS, just a question of when.

Errrr, the whole E train website is.........98.6 meg (Bloody hell!)

The photo index section is .....34.4 meg.

The workday reports take up ......11.7 meg.

The rest is divided into small sub sections, but its all on APT.

With luck Thursday should be the day Kits Section hits the web.

Thats another 12 meg of pictures to add to the index and the total.

Its a good job Prestel like me!!!!!!

If you look at the E train website, you will now notice that Kits

There are some very nice shots of E train, POP and the staff to look
through. Ive tried to give them some sort of order so happy browsing!

So far I've managed to install a new train set, with three APT-P cab views
ie left, front & right. Also a minor repaint of the Acela to carry InterCity
        APT logos.

I'm currently setting the traction / braking parameters to as near as I can
        get them.

So far only two cab controls are animated - the rest will follow in time,
once I get some hi-res cab photos.

Must ask Santa for 3DSM so I can have the correct shape !

          moving controls yet.

I need some better photographs of the E train cab,

Anyway here is a taster of E train on the S & C.

Does it bring back old times Kit.

As E train has no side windows, the left and right
          views will not be available.

The E train model is coming along very slowly.

            Hi Kit,
I need to borrow a high res digi camera so I can take some better
shots of the E train cab, yes I think Im gonna put the side panels
            in, just for effect.

The view need to be a little bit more forward, so you dont see the
seat, I just used a scan of a photo I took years ago to see if I
            could make a cab.

The big news is, Ive now got a copy 3D Canvas Pro, a really good
model program so E train will be on the rails again ASAP.

Im working on the Cab and model at the same time so something should
come out of all this soon(ish).

            E train workday on Saturday.

            Hi Rob,

            > I know you can't stick your head out whilst driving in reality but its
            well worth it on MSTS.<

Actually you could do that on E-Train, with the door window hinged down and
using the 'shunting controller', and the very first movement the train made
            was like this.

That was after the rather confusing attempt to drive it frm the centre seat
when they found that PC1 was in forward and PC2 in reverse..........

            Regards
            Kit

            Hello there fellow APT enthusiasts

I am recently acquired a Hornby APT, but I have a few parts missing.

            1. No Motor, the chasis and wheels are there but no motor or gears.
Has anyone got a service sheet which would give the exploded view of
            the model and part numbers.

            2. No pantograph. I dont really need a working one so some kind of
dummy mock up is required. Any Ideas?

            Thanks and Regards

            Andrew,

A Model Rail shop here in Australia has advertised service sheets for all
Triang Hornby stock and also has a large range of APT spare parts available
for sale. You can visit their web-site at :-

            http://www.simplex.net.au/~triang/index.html

Trust this may be of assistance

            Thanks for this info,

But as I suspected the pantograph is unavailable anywhere. Has
Anybody got any good ideas what I can use as a dummy replacement?

            Thanks and Regards

Have you tried Lima. My remembrance is that they are very good on spares. Look at the Railway Modeller small ads for someone specialising in Lima spares.

This will be of no interest to you at all unless you happened to be a member of the ATP team in the 70s & 80s - or knew the personalities.

            It's a story of coincidences!

Whilst taking refreshment in a Sheffield hostelry this lunch time, an acquaintance of mine came in whom I rarely see but know through my interest in folk music and dancing. Having mentioned to him in the past that I had worked at Derby he had asked if I knew Doug Holgate, a prominent member of the Signalling Section throughout my (almost) 30 years at the Research Department. It had transpired that he was at school with Doug.

My acquaintance was accompanied by another man whose ears pricked up when the subject of Derby was mentioned. "Did you know Tony Hobbs?", he asked. It turned out that his wife was the cousin of Tony Hobbs! The sad part of it was that he explained the background to Tony's summary dismissal from Brecknell-Willis a few years ago, of which I was unaware. However, Tony is now doing reasonably well, I was told.

Regards to all who've got this far
