Hello All,

Their has recently been a discussion, in a fellow eGroup, which included the APT. It started with a request for information about BR class 49 ? Someone then replied with the answer "Weren't the APT power cars numbered in the 49*** series ?" This in turn triggered several replies which include discussion about both E & P trains !  If you are not a member of  ukhrail here is the URL:

The answer to the question:
On what TV programme did APT-E make a short guest showing was
"A TOUCH OF FROST"

At the beginning of the programme Frost and his detective side kick
nearly get run over by an old DMU in the wagon works, as they lay at
the side of the train, they are infront of E Train, look in the
background. Most of the railway scenes were filmed around the
latter part of last year in the carrage and wagon works in York.

Which begs the question, what was E-Train doing in the C&W works anyway?

And to save an email, shall I bring the 'Kit Slide Collection' for the
Working Day next weekend but one? <g>

Or is that a silly question....?

Hi Folks,

Whilst searching the WWW I came across the following:

1. TVP Video Recordings ••
... Originally the professionally filmed footage was taken for use in an Advanced Passenger Train (APT) driving simulator, but was never actually used. ...
53% Sat, 06 Jan 2001 23:59:07 GMT http://homepages.enterprise.net/beulah/video/tvp.html

I have since found out that the filming was done sometime during 1971. It was taken from inside a Heritage DMU travelling along the Midland Main Line from St Pancras to  Sheffield via Derby. Its in two parts each priced
£18.95. Part 1 ( TV738) goes from St Pancras to Market Harborough. Part Two (TV730) goes from  Market Harborough to Sheffield.

Has anyone ever seen this video footage?

Andy,

>Has anyone ever seen this video footage?<

I haven't seen all of it, but we used some of the footage to check on speed
limit board positioning and predicted tilt system responses for the E-Train
Midland Main Line high speed runs for E-Train. That was the 1 hour
London-Leicester run attempts.

Of course in those days it wasn't a 'Heritage DUMU', it was a normal
service vehicle <g>

E & P together - I've never seen such a picture, and I doubt that one exists given that E Train went into the NRM in 1976 before any
P Trains were completed.

- looks like a job for 'PhotoShop' then.

unless you know different !

P.S.

I guess if you use Paint Shop Pro Animator to create a small animated gif of

type of pictures on Paul's Site, but not in Java form.

I'll have a go seeing how it would turn out...

Subject: E & P may have met.
Hello All,
There may just be a very very small chance that the E & P trains did
meet because in the very early 1980's, I think it was 80/81/82 a
complete P train was displayed at the then York Brel works for an
open day. I remember it because it was the first time I had seen a P
train in the real.

Im not 100% sure but I think E train was still in the NRM car park at
that time and P train was brought up from Crewe, so it would have had
to go past E train. Ive never seen a photo so this is conjecture but
P train did come to York so you never know!

The talk about this subject made me remember that P train
did come to York.

If there is a photograph of the two, thats were it would have talken
place.

Long live the APT

Hi Graham,

>Does anyone know if you can still ride on a train like APT today.<

Probably the nearest thing to APT-P technically is the Swedish X2000 train.
Quite a number of routes in Sweden have X2000s running on them, the longest
AFAIK is Stockholm-Malmo via Linkoping.

X2000s aren't as fast as APT-P was, but it has similar aerodynamics,
suspension and tilt system (WHAT a surprise...<g>)

In the near future the Virgin Cross-Country trains will bring almost APT-P
technology back to the UK though, so hang in there...

    Hi Folks,

I have come across three more P-Train photos, thanks to Dave Swan. The two of 370002 were taken at the Crewe Works Open Day in 1981 & the one of SC49001 was taken at Derby Works open day in August 1978.

    Enjoy!

I think that in general tilt trains don't use purpose built lines - for
example the APT idea was so it could use the conventional WCML but operate
at high speed because it can tilt going round the tight bends. This is also
the practise being used on Virgin's new trains. HOWEVER - in a bid for the
ECML high speed franchise Virgin proposed building a new TGV line with
205mph (non-tilt) trains, but this has been rejected. The ECML is expected
to stay with GNER who want tilt trains on existing lines.

If a new high speed line is being built TGV is the best choice - if an old
line or a new high speed but curved line tilt trains are the best.
      > >
      > > The tickets in the tilt trains are more cheaper if we compare with TGV ?
The French TGV tickets are very resonably priced - less than a slower
journey of the same distance in the UK. When Virgin get their new tilting
trains which are in fact 225km/h Pendolinos, tickets will be the same price
      as conventional trains.

      Hi Everyone,

If you are lucky enough to live in the North West of England make sure you are watching BBC 2 this Sunday at 13:00.

I was just flicking through the channels on TV & I saw the APT-P in action on BBC 1 !! I only caught the last few seconds of it though. It was a advert for North West Minster - Sunday at 13:00 on BBC 2. I don't know why it was showing a clip of the APT but I would "assume" it is something to do with tilting trains returning to the North West ?

      Roll on Sunday.....

      Rob and other intersted parties.

Regarding the cost of tilting trains against TGV, I read somewhere
once that had APT gone into squadron service, it would have cost one
fifth of the French solution over the same distance (London-Glasgow)
as the TGV (Paris-Marseille) at the same average speed for these
routes - bearing in mind that TGV is restricted in speed off the high
      speed line i.e. Lyon-Marseille.

The actual cost per km could have been even cheaper still as APT was
a more advance and lightweight train than TGV, and as such passengers
would not be charged a premium by BR for using these trains.

As you can see, a lot of variables come into play at this point eg
cost of ticket price, inflation differences in the two countries and
      so on.

I cannot comment on other tilting trains.

      Hope this helps a bit!

      Subject: Gas Turbine APT-P !!??
      Oh Dear...

The next issue of Rail Magazine, out this coming Wednesday 21/02/01, has a two page article about the new Virgin Pendolino launch. It shows the train at Old Dalby and gives the following information about Old Dalby:

"Old Dalby opened as a test track in 1971 on the former Midland Railway West Bridgford - Nottingham route. One of the track's first visitors was the experimental gas turbine powered APT-P tilting train, which was tested there intermittently between 1971 and 1976. Thirty years later, tilt is on the agenda again with the Class 390s.

Since then, it has seen trails for high speed current collection, which culminated in the design of the widely used BR/Brecknell Wills High Speed pantograph. The prototype HST, 252001 saw testing there, as did Class 89, 90, 91 and 92 electric locomotives.

Old Dalby is most famous for the spectacular crash test of a nuclear flask in 1984. This saw 46009 and a rake of mark 1 coaches crashed into a nuclear flask and a wagon at 90mph, devastating the locomotive, but leaving the flask intact."

However, it does give the correct information on the previous page as it says that the Old Dalby test track was used to test the original gas turbine powered APT-E in the 1970s. Old Dalby has been resurrected in view of its geographical layout with curves, tunnels and cuttings.

      Take Care,
      Andy

Well, what can I say ? I've just had the displeasure of watching NothWest Minster on BBC 2. When I saw the trailer for this programme it showed the APT-P in action, but the actual programme showed a few trains but no P-Train ?

Why do I pay for a TV licence.......
