Hello all.
It has come to my attention that the E train web pages are off-line.
I have contacted Prestel about the problem, they promise that the
server fault will be fixed ASAP.

I will post again when the pages are up and running.

Sunday 10th September 2000.

Alan Wickhams is visiting the NRM and is having a look at what the
support group are doing with E train, if I can I will try and get
down to meet him.

Thanks

    Hi Everyone,

I am now the lucky owner of the following item:

'British Rail Class 370 Trains (APT-P) Working Instructions'

This is a fascinating booklet containing everything you need to know about the train. It even tells you how the APT should be used when assisting another train which has failed !

I have attached scans of the booklet cover and the index page. If anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

    Take Care,

    Hi All,

At this moment in time I am trying to scan the 'APT-P Working Instructions'. The scans are not coming out 100%. This is because of the shape of the booklet, As I scan one page the other is hanging outside of my scanner. To get a perfect scan I would have to take out the original staple holding the booklet together - Something I am not prepared to do. However I will try my best and when completed I will possibly post the copied version in the 'Files' section.

    Take Care,

    Andy

    Hi Everyone.
Prestel have sorted out the problem, but the company that they use to
host customers websites has deleted the entire contents of the
Support Group web pages, they say they did it by mistake.

I have to write a full CD off of the web site and then post it to
them so that they can copy all 31mb+ of data back to the server.

They have allowed me to place videos on the web as compensation.

Sorry for the loss of service, check back to the support group site
at the end of the week.

Thanks for the offer, but the filming is out of my control, its a CH4

I checked out the APT-E badge on Ebay that Andy mentioned .

It's not the official BR E-Train security badge, its the lapel badge that
was porduced around that time. It depicts a view from the right forward
quarter of the E-Train Power Car, painted in white, blue and yellow enamel.
Nice badge though all the same.

that is what the prototype looked like??

        Hello,
The badge is of E Train (APT-E) Experimental, the first full version
of APT which ran from 1971-1976 and is now in the National Collection
at the NRM, York and is presently undergoing a conservation and
        restoration project.

For anyone who wants to see a better picture of the E Train badge,
        please look at

The version of APT which ran in service was the Prototype train, APT-
        P.

Hope this clears this issue up.

        >badge!!! It looks nothing like the actual train that ran, I believe
        >that is what the prototype looked like??<

There's a problem with names here. The APT that ran in service on the
Euston-Glasgow run was called the APT-P (P for Prototype) in BR parlance,
but it wasn't the first APT. The badge depicts the APT-E (E for
Experimental) that ran in the early '70s and is a pretty accurate rendition
except that the white bits on the badge were silver on the real train.
APT-E never did run in service as it was only intended for research work,
and only had 24 seats for 'passengers' anyway.

If you take a trip to the York NRM you can see the real thing of course,
and it's silver is still close to the original colour, just a bit worn by
now. When the project was running the APT-E was called 'E-Train' and the
APT-P was called 'P-TRain' by those of us working on them. If a full fleet
of APTs had gone into service they were going to be called 'S-Train', 'S'
for 'Service', but sadly that never happened of course.

I did not think that the APT actually went in to service. When I took
it, it was a test run and was only for BR employees and family?

It is very sad to think of the lack of development within our railway as
it is now over 20 years since they tried out this "new" concept, but
        nothing has really changed

Oh yes it did. I was on the very first passenger run even though I'd left
BR some time before. There were only 13 fare paying passengers on the
        train!

It ran for a few weeks, and was then taken out of service because if icing
        pantographs and H-K brake problems.

Dead right! Railways are a long term travel system, not a quick results
system, as most Governments seem to think

I just found this group, so hi to all.

I've been following the APT since it's beginning, but since moving to
the States nine year ago have lost touch with what's going on back
        home.

I always wanted one of the Hornby sets as a kid, but now I'm into N-
Scale I've decided to have a go at making a working N-Scale version
of the APT-P (And maybe the E after) It maybe a crazy plan, but it
        might just work.

Can anyone help with the following questions:
1, Does anyone have a non-working Hornby set for sale?
2, How accurate is the hornby set and how much should/could it be
        used as a modelling guide?
3, Are there any good web sites with photo's? (other than Suupport
        team site)

        Thanks,

        Hello all

I commute into London every day by train. Recently we have had some
new electrostars put into service. Today they have been withdrawn
for the second time in two months due to electrical and software
problems. I sat on one that broke down for 45 mins before the driver
managed to get it working. Normal service - which is provided by old
class 310 units - has been severely disrupted since the introduction
of the new trains. c2c are therefore not taking any more deliveries
until the problems are sorted out. On top of this, the trains should
have been in service in November 1999.

The point here is that the problems that APT-P had in initial service
were probably no worse than a standard train. Lets remember that
this was a high spec prototype as well - I think the press and BR
        management over reacted a bit.

I wonder if c2c will be scrapping all their new trains!

Well the Microsoft Train Sim gets even closer to release.
Now they have updated the site with some new screen shots of the
Flying Scotsman on the S&C, very impressive.

There are now also some video clips of the Simulator in action.
Again very impressive but the sound effects will need working on I
        think, anyway see it at

        http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim/

The second clip is worth downloading as it shows far more than the
first, its a little big at 12meg.

Or click and save the link below to save a small 1.9m version of the
        same thing

The above file "MUST" be saved to your local H/D and played from
        there.

        Enjoy

I'm sure that many of you will have seen the excellent screensavers from M&M in Germany which feature trains from around mainland Europe. The latest version is now available and at long last it includes many British trains including the good old APT. In my opinion a very entertaining way to spend the Euro equivalent of £10.
