Several hours before the famous annual horse race was run at Epsom Ian Campbell, Railways Board member for engineering and research as well as chairman of British Rail Engineering, announced that day's Derby winner – the Advanced Passenger Train.
Prototype Advanced Passenger Train power car 49003 was named 'City of Derby' by Mayor of Derby, Councillor Eric Reid on 7 June 1978.
